Doctoral researchers/Project employees for the Landscape Architecture research group

We are now looking for two Doctoral Researchers / Project Employees in ARVO project.

We are looking for highly motivated and skilled individuals to join landscape architecture´s research team and participate in the ARVO research project. One position is full-time, while the other is part-time. Both employment contracts are fixed-term until December 31, 2025.

The goal of the ARVO – Evaluation and strengthening of green structure in urban land use planning project is to strengthen the green structure in densely built cities to promote preparedness and adaptation to climate change, and to consider the already existing green structure and its preservation. In the project, e.g. a green structure planning tool suitable for evaluating, implementing and measuring green structure goals is being prepared. In addition, the functionality of the tool will be tested in practice, and the applicability of the tool for the assessment of total non-impairment will be studied, and the professionals responsible for the urban planning of the partner cities will be trained in the use of the tool.

Your role and goals 

The applicant works in the project on tool development tasks. Development tasks include content and technical development of the tool. Of the people currently being sought, both will participate in content development, but one will work more with technical development and the other will test more of the functionality of the tool in practice. Both people work closely with the rest of the project organization, which includes university researchers as well as employees from the partner cities. The work is also expected to lead to scientific publications in international academic conferences and journals. In addition, the tasks include identifying and applying the means of strengthening the green structure together with other land use planners.

Your experience and ambitions 

The applicant must have a master’s degree in landscape architecture or another applicable field. Successful handling of the task requires extensive knowledge of urban green structures, land use and landscape planning, as well as practical knowledge of geographic information software and materials. The position also requires the ability and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary cooperation with both internal experts and external stakeholders and actors. You are analytical and have good problem-solving skills. We also expect good communication and teamwork skills and a positive working attitude from you.

The applicant must demonstrate the ability and desire to learn new methods, work independently and in a team. The position requires excellent written and oral communication skills in Finnish, as the project involves extensive work with Finnish-speaking stakeholders, for whom written material is also produced. In addition, a good command of the English language is required.

We are seeking two doctoral researchers/project employees for a fixed-term employment until December 31, 2025. One employment relationship is full-time and the other part-time. We would prefer to commence full-time employment as soon as possible, for instance, during April 2024. Part-time employment (30-50%) can be initiated during the summer/fall of 2024 according to the agreement. Further details regarding the working hours can be discussed in more detail.

Aalto University offers occupational health care services and a good opportunity for different learning options. Salary will be determined following the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary for doctoral researcher or project employee is approximately 2700 euros.

We aim to combine the best of remote and on-site working and have flexible working hours. The position is located in Otaniemi, Espoo in a new campus building made and designed for the School of ARTS. Otaniemi campus area has a wide range of services and good public transport connections along the metro and major routes. Consistent with EU insurance and pension regulations, Aalto expects full-time academic employees to reside and work in Finland. More about working at Aalto here.
