PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of four (4) years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department. The position is part of the project “The role of membrane protein modifications in age-related brain pathology”, funded by the Trond Mohn foundation and the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

The PhD candidate will, together with the group leader, have a central role in building up a new research group financed through the TMS starting grant. The group will study various molecular aspects of neuropathology, unified through a focus on membrane proteins. See more information on the research group’s website https://www.uib.no/en/rg/membrain

Qualifications and personal qualities:

Required qualifications:

  • Completed master’s degree or equivalent in biomedicine or molecular biology
  • Very good English skills, both written and spoken.

 

Required work experience/competence:

  • Master standard molecular biology and cell biology methods that are relevant to the research group.
  • Solid experience with CRISPR/Cas9-based modification of human cell cultures, this means the entire process from planning/gDNA design to identification of positive clones.
  • Experience with cultivation of patient-derived primary cells.
  • Experience with activation assay for cellular signaling.
  • Completed the course Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS301/LAS302)

 

Desired work experience:

  • Experience from work with membrane proteins.
  • Experience with advanced confocal microscopy and image processing and analysis of microscopy images.
  • Experience with characterization of pathogenic protein variants.

 

Desired personal characteristics:

  • High learning capacity and curiosity and takes responsibility for own learning/progression.
  • Honest and with an ethical mindset suitable for research.
  • Introverted and positive, works well with others, accepts guidance in a good way.
  • Works independently and structured/planned and seeks help when necessary.
  • Able to deliver results to a defined deadline, such as article revisions.

About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

Applicant whose education is from another country than Norway, need to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages. Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

 

The PhD-position:

PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.

  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
