Researcher within Bioethics and Preference Research

Published: 2024-02-09

The Center for Research and Bioethics (CRB) is an interdisciplinary centre located at the Department of Public Health and Care Sciences at Uppsala University. The centre’s researchers have degrees in, e.g. medicine and care, ethics, philosophy and law and work to investigate ethical, philosophical and legal aspects of research, clinical and academic activities. The research group is now looking for a researcher in bioethics and preference research.

Duties
The work develops in two directions and involves conducting theoretical and empirical research independently and with others to examine the ethics of urban and home lighting and the ethical, legal, and social aspects of precision medicine and decision aids in cancer care. Specifically, the work includes creating a public health ethics framework to justify and provide guidance on lighting interventions in urban environments. An empirical bioethics approach is used to investigate norms and values embedded in public attitudes toward different urban and home lighting solutions.

Furthermore, thematic analysis of physician views on precision oncological medicine and the use of heavy computational methods in care are performed. The work also encompasses contributing to a quantitative investigation of cancer patients’ preferences for treatment. In addition to writing research articles and reports, the position also involves some participation in CRB’s teaching and, to some extent, administrative tasks. The recipient of the position is also expected to seek external research funding actively by himself and with others.

Requirements
The position requires a PhD in medical sciences focusing on public health and bioethics. Professional proficiency in English and certified Swedish language knowledge is required. Good collaboration skills, previous experience in international and interdisciplinary collaborations, and demonstrated experience in grant writing. Expertise in the methods mentioned in the Duties above is needed, including normative and theoretical bioethics, as well as experiences of using both qualitative and quantitative empirical research in the area.

Additional qualifications
Previous research in the same research areas, for example, through relevant publications in scientific journals, is also meritorious. So is previous experience with the discrete choice experiments method in patient preference research.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position, 12 months. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
