The Department of Sociology is one of Stockholm University’s biggest social science departments and is continuously ranked among the top 50 sociology departments in the world. The Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI) is an internationally leading multi-disciplinary research institute with about 100 employees, its main research areas being social policy, welfare, inequality and the labour market. The PhD positions are located at the institute’s Social Policy unit.

Project description
The PhD positions are part of the research programme “Sustainable synergies”. The aim of the programme is to study how the welfare state can be developed to support a sustainable working life for everyone, based on both internationally comparative research and in-depth analyses of Sweden. In focus are the working-life transitions individuals make during their life-course. Specifically, the programme will examine how different combinations of social policies can support successful transitions for different groups in the labour market.

The PhD candidates’ research will be part of work packages dealing with either education or health. Both are important determinants of employment careers, and therefore of social inequality throughout the life course. Of special interest are the ways in which policies related to education and healthcare are related to other policies within the same or other policy areas. Together with senior colleagues, the PhD candidates will work on these issues using quantitative research methods and different types of data, from single or multiple countries and individual- and/or country-level data.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: i) the quality of the candidates’ education, ii) earlier publications and other scientific qualifications, and iii) the originality, feasibility and potential sociological contribution of the research plan for the PhD thesis. The assessment will be based on courses and grades, degree projects/theses, references, relevant experience, the research plan for the PhD thesis, and interviews.

Terms of employment
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
