Do you want to take part in shaping the future?

PhD Research Fellow in chemical valorisation of biomass

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in valorisation of biomass at the Department of Chemistry. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department).

About the project/work tasks

Chemical knowledge, technology and competence are essential factors in unlocking the potential and meeting the objectives of biorefining in a future bio-based circular economy. This PhD-project addresses targeted biorefining approaches, emphasising thermochemical conversion of biomass wastes (e.g. food/fruit wastes and macro algae), into high-value compounds such as furans, phenols, platform chemicals, bioenergy and biofuels. Analytical and statistical tools are essential in understanding and examining occurring conversion challenges, workup protocols and product purification. Assessing sustainability perspectives by applying a life cycle thinking approach will also play a central role in the project structure.

The work will be carried out in the research group of associate professor Camilla Løhre, in the thematic research group “Sustainable Energy Carriers, Chemicals and Materials” at Department of Chemistry.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in chemistry, chemical engineering, renewable energy, or equivalent subjects, or must have submitted his/her master’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • Experience from instrumental analytical methods for chemical characterization and quantification of organic compounds is a requirement.
  • Experience from chemical valorisation of biomass is a requirement.
  • Experience with carbohydrate and bioresource chemistry is an advantage.
  • Experience with sustainability- and/or life cycle assessment is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.
