Postdoctoral fellow in cancer research with focus on extracellular vesicles

Ref PAR 2024/67

The Institute of Clinical Sciences, Department of surgery, is now searching for a postdoctoral fellow to work with preclinical research, mainly concerning extracellular vesicles and cancer. The newly established research group of Rossella Crescitelli conducts translational research in extracellular vesicle field (https://www.gu.se/om-universitetet/hitta-person/rossellacrescitelli). The research group is based at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, but also belongs to the Wallenberg Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) and Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research (SCCR), which provides good opportunities for career development and network building. WCMTM and SCCR consist of a large network of research group leaders and their team members within the University of Gothenburg and also well-functioning national collaborations. Moreover, the research group has access to Krefting Research Center, an exceptionally well-equipped center for research in the field of extracellular vesicles. More information about ongoing research activities and key research groups within Wallenberg Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine, Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research and Krefting Research Centre can be found at www.wcmtm.gu.se, https://www.gu.se/en/cancercenter; https://www.gu.se/en/krefting-research.

Subject area

Extracellular vesicles and Cancer Research

Subject area description

The project will elucidate how extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate communication between cells in the tumor microenvironment. The overall aim of this project is to reveal novel extracellular vesicle-mediated mechanisms of cancer growth and progression. We have recently developed a state-of-the-art method to isolate highly purified EVs directly from tissue (Crescitelli R, Nature Protocols, 2021 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41596-020-00466-1). The postdoctoral fellow will utilize this novel technology to explore and describe EV-mediated communication between cells in the tumor microenvironment. By being placed under the umbrella of Roger Olofsson Bagge´s and Jan Lötvall´s group we have access to both fresh and froze tumor samples as well as to the state-of-the-art equipment for EV research. By isolating EVs derived from tumor tissues, we aim at identifying the pathways by which cells in the tumor microenvironment communicate and how this contributes to tumor progression. The knowledge generated from this project will improve our basic understanding of cancer and will provide a platform for developing future therapies and diagnostics.

Duties

The work includes designing, planning, and performing research work aimed at studying the microenvironments in tumors using cellular and molecular methods, including different types of DNA, RNA and protein analyses, as well as work with flow cytometry, electron microscopy and advanced methods for the isolation and characterization of extracellular vesicles. A close collaboration will take place with our clinical laboratory to collect patient samples. The work will mainly be carried out at the Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research and Krefting Research Centre.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Assessment criteria

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher a PhD in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology or equivalent is required. A broad base of expertise, including cell biology (cell culturing), biochemistry (Western blotting) and molecular biology (qRT-PCR) is required. Experience in single-cell transcriptomic analysis, mass spectrometry and flow cytometry analysis will be strongly advantageous. Familiarity with extracellular vesicles and mouse models is an added advantage. Experience in advanced microscopy (i.e. confocal and transmission electron microscopy) is considered a plus. The work takes high demands on self-motivation, independence, and accuracy. Great weight will be given to performance during the interview and personal qualities such as commitment, initiative, and cooperation skills. Ability to communicate in written and spoken English is a must.

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for two years with the possibility of one year’s extension, 100 % of full-time and is placed at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Surgery. Starting date; As agreed
