PhD position: Quantum thermodynamics of electronic devices

We invite applications for a PhD position in the theory of thermodynamics of quantum and nanoscale devices. The position will be part of a research team working on energy conversion in small scale electronic and hybrid devices, reaching from fundamental principles to viable applications in quantum technologies. This research is funded by an ERC consolidator grant (2024-2028) and you will thus be part of a newly formed team of postdocs and PhD students working together towards a common goal. Beyond collaborations in the theory group, where you will get the possibility to bring in own research ideas, you will have the possibility to interact with local and international experimental teams.

Project description
The position – desired starting date in the first half of 2024 – will be placed in the theory division of the department for Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers, where diverse research from quantum transport, quantum information, and quantum materials to quantum thermodynamics is carried out. The hired PhD student will work in the group “Dynamics and Thermodynamics of nanoscale devices”, lead by Janine Splettstoesser . The specific research project of this position will deal with the unique properties of the energy conversion of electronic devices, with a special focus on nonthermal resources. In small-scale devices, nonthermal distributions are ubiquitous, occurring due to the competition between coupling to different baths and partial thermalisation and equilibration processes, due to external driving and irradiation, or as a result of filtering effects. This project will seek to get a fundamental understanding of conversion processes exploiting nonthermal distributions with the long-term vision to design novel protocols for future energy-sustainable nanoscale devices.

Major responsibilities
For this PhD position, we seek a highly motivated and technically skilled candidate with a strong interest in theoretical thermodynamics analysis of nanoscale and quantum devices. The candidate is expected to carry out their research in close collaboration with other team members and in dialogue with local and international experimental colleagues, while growing in independence. We expect you to show initiative by proactively developing and contributing with your own research ideas within the advertised project. You will work in a collaborative environment, where team work is essential for project success.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Theoretical Physics or similar.
Experience in theory of quantum thermodynamics and/or quantum transport theory is desired.
The applicant shall be self-propelled with a strong driving force to pursue excellent theoretical research in a collaborative environment. The position requires very good verbal and written communication skills in English.

Post-Doc in AI Engineering – processes and products

As a PostDoc researcher in the Division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering you will be part of a team of researcher with a focus on AI Engineering and Human Computer Interaction. The candidate will benefit from our many ongoing collaborations with academia and industry and the opportunities for further professional development.

Project description
A key aspect of human-AI interaction, which is neglected when designing AI systems, is the human decision-makers. In essence, the human’s perception of the communication received from the AI is core to this interaction. AI systems that are developed to bridge the gap between AI and humans, where humans are the consumers of AI system predictions, are intended to improve the quality of decisions. However, humans often make less than optional decisions since they are distorted by their cognitive biases, thus AI systems can reinforce biases or improve the way humans think about a situation. Thus, we argue that it is natural to use the dual-process theory as a lens to understand human cognition when designing AI systems that are intended to augment human intelligence.

In this project we seek to augment human intelligence by not only develop effective explanation techniques, but also by identifying ways to increase humans cognitive motivation for engaging analytically with the explanations from an AI system when designing AI systems that are intended to augment human intelligence.

Information about the department and division
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg in Sweden with approximately 300 employees from more than 30 countries is widely recognised for excellent research and education. We are announcing one PostDoc position at the Division for Interaction Design and Software Engineering with Chalmers University of Technology as the employer. With approximately 50 researchers including PhD students, PostDocs, and professors, we are one of the largest academic software engineering research groups in the world. Major responsibilities
As a Postdoctoral researcher your main responsibility is to lead the research project in collaboration with the project PIs and drive its implementation (80%) and to teach (20%) within the area of software engineering. The teaching activities at the department consists of lecturing, supervising exercises, supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis projects for at most 20% of your time.

The research entails conducting literature reviews in the area of AI Engineering, Software Engineering, and Cognitive Science that describe cognitive biases, debiasing strategies (including visualization of the output from AI systems), and strategies to increase human cognitive motivation for engaging in analytical thinking. To develop a methodology for how to use dual process theoretical analysis of decision-making for human-AI collaboration to reason about cognitive bias when designing and developing AI systems. Finally, conducting case studies, surveys, and experiments to validate and refine the developed methodology.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must hold a doctoral degree , awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline, in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related area.

This position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Programming skills in Python is required.

Preferable you have experience in Human Computer Interaction, quantitative methods, empirical research, and Artificial Intelligence. It would be beneficial to have experience in cognitive science and/or psychology.

PhD Student in Machine Learning for Information/Communication Technology

Our modern “connected world” is powered by a vast infrastructure of fiber-optic cables that connect cities, countries, and continents (see, for example, submarinecablemap.com). Such cables provide high-speed data traffic over very long distances, and they collectively constitute the so-called Internet backbone. By harnessing recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), the aim of this project is to leverage this vast infrastructure not just for communication, but also as a global sensing network, capable of detecting real-time environmental changes, potential disasters (like earthquakes or landslides), and infrastructure vulnerabilities.

This PhD position is fully funded for 4 years (plus possible extension based on teaching & department duties) at one of Europe’s leading technical universities. The PhD student will be supervised by Assist. Prof. Christian Häger, in collaboration with Prof. Erik Agrell (IEEE Fellow) and Prof. Magnus Karlsson (IEEE & Optica Fellow). We have a very large network of international collaboration partners, with many possibilities for longer research visits abroad, for example to Germany or the USA. Information about the project and division
Deployed telecommunication fibers are nowadays used almost exclusively for transmitting data. On the other hand, we at Chalmers are exploring innovative ways to enhance fiber-optic networks to simultaneously serve as real-time environmental monitors. Our research blends elements of communication theory, machine learning, and photonics. In this project, the successful candidate will contribute to the newly emerging research area of integrated communication and fiber sensing. One objective is to develop novel theoretical models that capture the impact of environmental transients (for example an earthquake) on the optical propagation channel. A second objective is to explore new signal-processing algorithms that can natively support both high-speed data transmission and advanced polarization sensing. A particular emphasis will be placed on the application of emerging machine learning and data-driven techniques to optimize communication performance and sensing accuracy.

At the Department of Electrical Engineering, we conduct internationally renowned research spanning many fields and including information and communication theory, machine learning, and signal processing. We offer a dynamic, supportive, international research environment with well over 150 employees from more than 20 countries and an extensive national and international collaboration network that encompasses both other academic partners and industry. You will belong to a strong team of researchers in optical communications, organized in the research center FORCE. Major responsibilities
Your main responsibility will be to perform cutting-edge research and independently formulate research questions within the project scope, as well as develop strategies for solving them. The position includes also teaching at the undergraduate and M.Sc. level and other departmental duties of up to 20% full time (the employment contract is extended beyond the 4 years, accordingly).

PhD student position in Optical midhaul for cell-free 6G networks

This PhD position is sponsored by the Marie Curie Doctoral Network EMPOWER-6G funded by the European Commission.
The EMPOWER-6G projects aim to propose a new converged optical-wireless architecture for efficient 6G Cell-Free (CF)-based access networks that can support advanced user services such as holographic telepresence, advanced AR/VR, massive digital twinning, and flying networks.

The position is a collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology and Infinera in Germany.
The candidate will have a unique opportunity to experience academic and industrial environments by spending 18 months at the Optical Networks (ON) group at Chalmers and 18 months at Infinera premises.
Additionally, the candidate will build a solid professional network by leveraging the EMPOWER-6G partner network, which includes: IQUADRAT (coordinator), the National Technical University of Athens, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, ISI Athena, the Katholieke Universitet Leuven, IS-WIRELESS, NVIDIA, and SIAE Microelettronica.

Project description
The PhD topic focuses on developing next-generation metro-access optical networks supporting 6G mobile networks.
The candidate will be responsible for optimizing the performance of such systems and designing and evaluating network scenarios where transceivers use a transmission scheme based on digital subcarrier multiplexing to create coherent point-to-multipoint optical networks.
The candidate’s work will touch upon topics such as resource optimization strategies, reduction of energy consumption, and backhaul or fronthaul capacity management using meta-heuristic and machine learning (ML) techniques.

The work will involve a combination of analytical and numerical analyses, techno-economic studies, and, where possible, experiments.

Major responsibilities
– Optimize network design and service provisioning strategies’ performance (including economic aspects) in metro/access aggregation and 6G-fronthaul scenarios where digital subcarrier multiplexed optical systems are used.
– Explore methods/strategies to enhance the functionality and performance of digital subcarrier multiplexed optical networks.
– Work collaboratively with other forward-thinking team members and external researchers from academia and industry.
– Write and present internal and public reports such as deliverables and milestones.

Qualifications

PhD student positions in Hybrid Quantum Systems

In the Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory, we will develop nanofabricated devices to create interfaces between cold atoms, light and motion. We will use these devices to create quantum states of mechanical motion. Project description
The Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers is a new laboratory that will exploit the exquisite control over light enabled by photonics. Nanofabrication of photonic integated circuits and mechanical oscillators with ultralow loss is at the heart of our research. Cold atoms are the third ingredient, and we will use the tools of atomic physics to cool and trap atoms and couple their quantum states to light and mechanical motion. By exploiting this interaction, we will probe quantum physics at the macroscopic scale. The systems we develop will be exquisite spin sensors, enabling applications in biosensing and material characterization.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student, your main focus will be on conducting research and developing your skills – both technical and transferable. You will work as a part of a team and will be expected to collaborate effectively with a diverse and international group. As one of the first PhD students in the group, you will play a large role in the design, construction and operation of new and complex experiments, which means you will learn all the skills necessary to lead a research project.

PhD position: Quantum entanglement of levitated superconducting particles

Do you want to experimentally study limits of quantum mechanical behavior? If so, this PhD project is the ideal fit. The goal of the project is to explore the generation of quantum entanglement in the center-of-mass motion of levitated microparticles. This research project builds upon our group’s expertise in magnetically levitating superconducting microparticles on a chip. The project is performed as part of an ERC Consolidator Grant. The research is placed in the vibrant research environment at Chalmers, encompassing the Quantum Technology Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) and the Wallenberg Center for Quantum Technology.

About the PhD project, the QTlab and WACQT
The goal of the PhD project is to explore the generation of quantum states, in particular entangled states, in the center-of-mass motion of levitated microparticles. These particles can weigh between nanogram and microgram. An exciting part of the project will be to study potential mass-limits for generating these quantum states. The project will be based on the experimental platform of chip-based magnetic levitation of superconducting microparticles. Quantum states of the particle motion can then be generated by coupling the particle’s motion to flux-sensitive superconducting circuits, such as flux-tunable microwave resonators or superconducting qubits. The tasks of the project encompass simulation, fabrication and experiments. We will train you in all required techniques such that you will get a head start for performing your project in our collaborative working environment.

The research project is experimental in nature, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Witlef Wieczorek and funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant. The Wieczorek group is part of the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTLab) at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2). The QTLab performs cutting edge research in the field of quantum technologies and provides an international, creative and stimulating research environment. The Department MC2 houses a state-of-the-art cleanroom facility for micro- and nanofabrication, which will be used by you for device fabrication. The Wallenberg Center for Quantum Technology (WACQT) is a 12-year initiative started in 2018 with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology. WACQT at Chalmers encompasses research in quantum computing, quantum transduction, quantum sensing, and quantum foundations with a research base in experiment and theory providing a thriving and internationally leading research environment in the field of quantum technologies. 

Major responsibilities
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate for this PhD position. Your major responsibility is to pursue the goals of your research project and to pursue your own doctoral studies. You will receive adequate training such that you will reach these goals successfully. The position may also include some level of teaching as well as taking part in the supervision of bachelor or master thesis students, up to 20 percent of working hours. You will be embedded in a collaborative, stimulating and supportive environment, where team work is fostered and key for project success.

Qualifications

Major responsibilities
We are looking for up to four highly motivated and skilled graduates interested in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The  selected candidates are awarded with a PhD position, which they can place at any Nano research group at Chalmers and with which they coordinate their specific PhD program. This is the nineth in a yearly recurring call.

These positions are special in the sense that most PhD student positions at Chalmers are announced by a specific research group, funded by a specific research project. However, with an Excellence PhD student position you have your own funding, which of course gives you far more freedom in choosing both research group and research project.

A PhD exam in Nano is the perfect start for your career, whether you aim at academic research at the highest level, advancing technology and business ideas in major companies or spinning off your own idea into a start-up company.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours.

Qualifications
The selection is based on three criteria:
1) Your MSc and BSc grades
2) A two-page written reflection on your background and your motivation to pursue a PhD. Specifically motivate your interest in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology and in pursueing your PhD at Chalmers. This letter may contain a description of your current MSc project and/or future research interests as well as of your personal qualities.
3) Your perfomance at an interview to which we expect to invite the top 8 candidates. The interview is preliminarily planned to take place on April 17th, 2024.

To be eligible to apply, the final exam of your master studies needs to take place (or needs to have taken place) AFTER 1st of June 2023. If you are already accepted in a PhD school you are not eligible to apply.

PhD position: Quantum thermodynamics & fluctuations in electronic devices

We invite applications for a PhD position in the theory of thermodynamics of quantum and nanoscale devices. The position will be part of a research team working on energy conversion in small scale electronic and hybrid devices, reaching from fundamental principles to viable applications in quantum technologies. This research is funded by an ERC consolidator grant (2024-2028) and you will thus be part of a newly formed team of postdocs and PhD students working together towards a common goal. Beyond collaborations in the theory group, where you will get the possibility to bring in own research ideas, you will have the possibility to interact with local and international experimental teams.

Project description
The position will be placed in the theory division of the department for Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers, where diverse research from quantum transport, quantum information, and quantum materials to quantum thermodynamics is carried out. The hired PhD student will work in the group “Dynamics and Thermodynamics of nanoscale devices”, lead by Janine Splettstoesser . The specific research project of this position will deal with the thermodynamics of energy conversion of nanoscale devices. The focus will be on the role of fluctuations, which in contrast to macroscopic systems can be of high relevance in nanoscale devices. It is envsioned to address fluctuations both as resource of conversion processes and as limitation in the precision of the outcome of the conversion process.
The long-term vision of the project is to explore realistic settings in which such energy conversion processes can be exploited in quantum technologies.

Major responsibilities
For this PhD position, we seek a highly motivated and technically skilled candidate with a strong interest in theoretical thermodynamics analysis of nanoscale and quantum devices. The candidate is expected to carry out their research in close collaboration with other team members and in dialogue with local and international experimental colleagues, while growing in independence. PhD Student for Tomorrow’s Solar Cells and Wearable Electronics

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join our team working on solar cell, bioelectronics and wearable electronics. The aim to design sustainable materials for future. The project is supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The project brings together 5 research groups from Chalmers University of Technology and Linköping University, led by Christian Müller, Anna Martinelli, Eva Olsson, Mats Fahlman and Simone Fabiano. The mission of the project is the realization of doped organic semiconductors that display truly stable electronic behaviour. You will be part of a team of five PhD students, as well as several Postdocs, who will together develop and study new materials concepts that facilitate stable doping. We have an extensive international collaboration network that is a resource for your work where you will have access to the forefront expertise and top-of-the-line facilities.

Doping is essential for the optimization of the electronic performance of organic semiconductors, and as such essential for a wide range of emerging technologies from sustainable energy harvesting via organic photovoltaics and thermoelectrics to wearable electronics and bioelectronics. The doping process involves a chemical or electrochemical reaction that allows to tune the electrical and electronic properties of an organic semiconductor. The resulting doped state, however, is prone to evolve with time, which limits the lifetime of electronic devices.

Project description
The project will leverage concepts from the field of molecular glasses to realize stable organic semiconductors and devices. Your specific project will entail a detailed study of the phase behaviour and glass formation of dopant/semiconductor pairs, using a suite of characterization methods from thermal and mechanical analysis to optical spectroscopy and various scattering techniques.

It can be anticipated that the project will have considerable impact on the field of organic electronics by enabling the more widespread usage of some of the most promising materials, which will accelerate further development of many emerging technologies.

The Eva Olsson Group focuses on the correlation between fine scale material structure, down to the atomic level, and material properties using advanced electron microscopy. All research is conducted in co-operation with other universities/institutes and/or industry. Presently, the group consists of 1 Professor, 1 guest professor, 2 permanent researcher, 3 Postdocs and 3 PhD students.

Major responsibilities
The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research, in collaboration with postdocs and students at Chalmers and Linköping University.
