Job description

A PhD Research Fellowship is available at the Department of Mathematics, Mechanics Division at the University of Oslo (UiO). The position is parts of large interdisciplinary projects which focuses on the development of mathematical models and numerical simulations of sequestration of material on intracellular membranes. More specifically, it will address the basic mechanochemical processes that regulate one of the most fundamental communication pathways in cell biology – the “self-eating” process of autophagy. Autophagy protects us from infections, cancer and neurodegerative diseases and has been shown to promote longevity in model organisms. The PhD work will involve theoretical modelling, in combination with numerical simulations to develop a digital twin of the cell experiments. It is planned that an active phase field model will be developed and solved numerically to advance our understanding of these membrane wetting dynamics. The PhD research fellowship will be part of the group of Prof. Andreas Carlson (https://acarlson-uio.github.io), where the work will be conducted in close collaboration with experimental cell biologists at Oslo University Hospital in the group of Prof. Harald Stenmark. The project will also involve international collaborations and is a unique opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary environment.

The PhD student will: 

  • Develop theoretical models for cell membrane dynamics, coupling elastic effects, fluid flow and the biological membrane composition.
  • Implement and solve numerically the theoretical membrane model.
  • Collaborate with experimentalists.
  • Develop independence and be self-driven to advance with their research project.
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team with expertise in mechanics, biology, physics and biophysics.
  • Follow our PhD program that include an educational component.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation.   • Master’s degree or equivalent in mechanics, fluid mechanics, biophysics, physics or applied mathematics. 
  • Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Other desired qualifications include:

  • Earlier involvement in interdisciplinary research projects or/and a strong background in biophysics or interfacial fluid mechanics will also be considered positively, as well as experience with programming.
  • A strong theoretical educational background in mathematics and continuum mechanics.

Candidates without a Master’s degree have until June 30, 2024 to complete the final exam.

Personal skills:

  • Good social and collaboration skills and ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary scientific environment.

The project:

Symmetry plays a fundamental role in quantum physics. Recent years have seen a paradigm shift in the understanding of global symmetries. This has unravelled new vastly generalized symmetries symmetries. Despite rapid progress, this is very much an evolving subject and both the general theory and its applications to quantum matter host many unresolved questions. The goal of this project is to advance the theory of global categorical symmetries and explore their implications for the phase diagrams of quantum matter. Key objectives include refining the classification of phases of matter using such symmetries, investigating their potential to stabilize fragile quantum states, and exploring whether the corresponding (topological) symmetry operators can encode robust quantum information

 

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of theoretical physics with a specialisation in condensed matter theory. Applicants can have a background from advanced many body quantum mechanics and graduate level quantum field theory. Some background in mathematics, particularly topology and category theory is beneficial but not mandatory.

The PhD project will be funded by a grant from the Villum foundation and carried out within the Niels Bohr International Academy at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. The group is a part of the Niels Bohr institute, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located in Copenhagen. The PhD programme three year full-time study within the framework of the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme), if you already have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.

Qualifications needed for the regular programme
To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. many body quantum physics or theoretical physics. Terms of employment in the regular programme
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.

Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

The terms of employment and salary are in accordance to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Job description / Project description / Development plan:

The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to run and analyze output from high-resolution model simulations of mixed-phase clouds using the Weather and Research and Forecast (WRF) model. The focus will be on two regions, namely the Arctic and the Southern Ocean. The postdoctoral fellow will also be expected to carry out comparisons of model output with available observational data sets in these regions and may be required to make model source code modifications to ensure that the mixed-phase clouds are well represented in the model.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.

Qualification requirements:

  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are a requirement, and mastery of a Scandinavian language is advantageous.

Desired qualifications:

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

  • Comprehensive background in cloud microphysics. 
  • Experience with common programming languages in the fields of meteorology and climate science (e.g., Fortran, Python).
  • Experience with handling and analyzing large data sets.

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Space Plasma Physics in the Department of Physics and Technology at the University of Bergen. The position is for a fixed-term period of three years with the possibility of a fourth year consisting of other compulsory duties (e.g. teaching within the department). This PhD Research Fellowship is a part of the “E3D-BRITE: EISCAT_3D-Based Reconstruction of Ionosphere-Thermosphere Electrodynamics” project, funded by the Research Council of Norway.

About the project/work tasks:

The E3D-BRITE project addresses a grand challenge in space physics: How do electric currents in Earth’s ionosphere evolve in time within a three-dimensional volume and on spatial scales smaller than 100 km? This and related questions have been impossible to answer because of a lack of truly 3D measurements of the ionosphere-thermosphere system.

We are hiring a PhD Research Fellow to work with the E3D-BRITE team to develop and test EISCAT_3D experiments and open-source software tools that generate an optimized reconstruction of the ionosphere-thermosphere electrodynamics within the EISCAT_3D field of view. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to advance our understanding far beyond its present boundaries.

The E3D-BRITE project is a collaboration of experts at the University of Bergen, the University of Tromsø in Northern Norway, and the University of Oulu in Finland. Project description
The project aims to develop theory and probabilistic methods for securing cyber-physical systems (CPSs) possessing learning and control capabilities: digital devices that learn from data they collect, and automatically decide how to best interact with the physical world over time. 

Probabilistic methods are a natural way to deal with the uncertainty of physical systems and unintentional failures. However, attacks are not only probabilistic but can have strategic behaviors, tailored to causing harm while avoiding detection. Hence, it is critical to develop systematic approaches that integrate the probabilistic and strategic aspects of attacks in security analysis.

Duties
The successful candidate will work with probabilistic control methods in the context of model-free and model-based control under strategic adversaries. In particular, the doctoral student is expected to leverage control-theoretic and statistical methods to rigorously analyze and design the security of CPSs that learn how to control from data and prior models.

The successful candidate will join the research group Secure Learning and Control Laboratory at Uppsala University, a growing interdisciplinary research group doing basic and applied research at the intersection of cybersecurity, control theory, and machine learning. Our vision is to develop methodologies for designing intelligent autonomous decision-making systems that are secure and resilient against malicious adversaries and natural failures.

A Ph.D. student is expected to devote their time to graduate education mainly. The rest of the duties may involve teaching at the Department, including also some administration, to at most 20%.

Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in engineering physics, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, or in a similar field, or

The project

Wood constitutes an unlimited resource of renewable biomass indispensable for production of sustainable energy and for supply of high quality materials. Molecular understanding of wood formation would provide a new avenue for designing bio-inspired materials with remarkable strength and rigidity. Wood consists of so called secondary cell walls that encase cells in wood forming plant tissues. A critical step in the wood forming process involves the cessation of primary wall synthesis (a wall structure that surrounds growing cells) and initiation of secondary cell wall synthesis. Here, we seek to elucidate the biomolecular and structural cell wall changes that take place during wood formation. In the theortical phase of the project, we integrate experimental and high resolution simulation data into mesoscopic simulations and aim to understand the biomechanical properties of secondary cell walls.

 

Who are we looking for?

A PhD candidate should have a background in physics, chemistry, biology, bioinformatics, or related fields. It is considered a strength to have knowledge of molecular dynamics simulations, and computer programming.

A three year full-time study within the framework of the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme), if you already have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.

We are seeking a PhD research fellow with a genuine interest in materials physics and solar energy applications. You must be a team player with the ability to work well independently and in interdisciplinary scientific teams.

The position is part of the interdisciplinary flagship project SOLARIS, which addresses fundamental materials science for solar energy materials and solar energy harvesting with an application-oriented focus. In particular, photovoltaic and solar fuel production by photo- or PV-driven electrocatalysis will be investigated, for which novel functional compounds need to be discovered through combinatorial materials science.

The overall objective of SOLARIS is to significantly advance the field of solar energy materials science and by promoting the shift towards green economy in long-term perspective.

The Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) comprises UiO’s focus on renewable energy, materials science, and nanotechnology. The Centre is an interdisciplinary collaboration between five research groups in physics and chemistry, and spearheads the MN Faculty’s efforts for sustainable energy solutions.

The successful candidate is expected to work as part of a team in SMN and together with other fellows in the SOLARIS project.

The PhD research fellow will utilize and develop non-standard approaches in photoelectron spectroscopy to improve our understanding of material and electronic properties relevant to solar energy harvesting. For example, depth-dependent XPS or photoemission measurements to determine band bending, interfacial band alignment, doping, etc. will be performed. This includes concurrent method development (e.g., advanced data handling and instrument modification).

As a PhD research fellow, your role will involve participating in measurement campaigns at synchrotron beamlines. You will also present experimental results at national and international conferences and workshops, providing opportunities to establish your scientific network. Additionally, you are expected to be the first author or contribute to the publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The PhD research fellow will be affiliated with the semiconductor physics group LENS (Light and electricity from novel Semiconductors) with around 30 highly dedicated professors, researchers, postdocs, PhD fellow researchers, engineers, admin and master students.

The research group has an excellent infrastructure covering chemical, structural, optical and electrical characterization methods, device fabrication and simulations. The infrastructure includes the Micro- and Nanotechnology Laboratory (MiNaLab) with a clean room area in excess of 400 m2 with a multitude of modern fabrication and characterization facilities.

Job description

We seek a PhD Research Fellow with qualifications and interest in materials science and renewable energy conversion technologies.

The Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) comprises UiO’s focus on renewable energy, materials science, and nanotechnology. The Centre is an interdisciplinary collaboration between five research groups in physics and chemistry, and spearheads the MN Faculty’s efforts for sustainable energy solutions.

The position is part of the interdisciplinary SOLARIS initiative which addresses solar energy harvesting and storage, including electrochemical energy conversion.

The PhD Research Fellow will be affiliated with the research groups Electrochemistry and Semiconductor Physics at the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, respectively. Both groups consist of around 30-40 highly dedicated professors, researchers, postdocs, PhD fellows, engineers, admin, MSc and exchange students.  The groups regularly organize social events including seminars and cabin trips with outdoor activities, relay race around Oslo, potluck and garden party.

The Electrochemistry group is among the world-leading in solid-state electrochemistry and the materials science of proton-conducting oxides for electrochemical energy conversion technologies such as proton ceramic fuel cells and electrolyzers. These technologies are central in the transition to renewable energy and in the electrification of industrial processes.

The research groups have excellent infrastructure covering chemical, structural, optical and electrical characterization methods, device fabrication and simulations. 

The infrastructure includes the Micro- and Nanotechnology Laboratory (MiNaLab) with a clean room area in excess of 400 m2 with a multitude of modern fabrication and characterization facilities.

The PhD Research Fellow will utilize combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to fabricate thin films with compositional gradients – a novel method pioneered within SOLARIS by members of the Semiconductor Physics group. The thin films will be characterized with a range of structural, chemical and electrical characterization techniques to study fundamental relationships between materials properties and their performance as function of composition. The materials systems will be focused towards mixed ionic/electronic conducting oxygen/steam electrodes for proton ceramic electrochemical cells.

The PhD research work can be tailored according to the qualifications and academic interest of the top candidates including the possibility for combining experimental, simulation and theoretical methods.

The PhD research fellowship is part of the research project Combinatorial Materials Science for Protonic Electrochemical Energy Conversion (Comicon) funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project will also employ a postdoctoral research fellow which gives excellent opportunity for collaboration, in addition to working in teams across SMN and SOLARIS.

The PhD Research Fellow will also be able develop experience in project participation and management, and take part in collaboration with international research partners including exchange visits.

Job description

One of the research focuses of the Nuclear Physics group is the application of nuclear physics for medical applications. This pertains to studies of novel production pathways for medically relevant radionuclides. Such radionuclides are used for a range of current cancer procedures, whereby the decay radiation is used for diagnostic and/or treatment purposes. Unlike external beam therapy, which is performed on predetermined sites on the patient, the biomolecules employed by targeted radionuclide therapy are attracted towards cancerous cells throughout the body. This enables the simultaneous treatment of unidentified, secondary malignant growths. In particular, this project is focused on emerging alpha-emitting radionuclides for targeted alpha therapy (TAT): an exciting new treatment modality for cancer.

This research topic has a clear societal impact and is one of the main research topics of the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC), which is focused on strengthening Norway’s research capacity and competence in nuclear science. The project will be conducted in collaboration with the University of California—Berkeley, which is a partner within the NNRC and a long-standing collaborator of UiO. The candidate is expected to contribute to and take part in activities organised by the Centre.

Qualification requirements

  • A solid background in scientific computing, including proficiency in Python programming

Desired:

Several qualifications are considered strongly desirable and will be used in the ranking of the candidates:

  • Experience with gamma-ray detectors
  • Experience with data-analysis techniques relevant for extracting absolute cross sections and stacked-target experiments
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Curie and/or ROOT
  • Experience with using nuclear-reaction codes which are commonly used to predict the reaction cross sections for medical isotope production, e.g. TALYS, TENDL, CoH, ALICE and EMPIRE

The PhD programme

Depending of your level of education, you can undertake the PhD programme as either:

Option A: A three year full-time study within the framework of the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme), if you already have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.

Option B: An up to five year full-time study programme within the framework of the integrated MSc and PhD programme (the 3+5 scheme), if you do not have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master´s degree – but you have an education equivalent to a Danish bachelors´s degree.

Option A: Getting into a position on the regular PhD programme

Qualifications needed for the regular programme
To be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. Mathematics. For information of eligibility of completed programmes, see General assessments for specific countries and Assessment database.

Terms of employment in the regular programme
Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.

Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Option B: Getting into a position on the integrated MSc and PhD programme

If you do not have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master´s degree, you might be qualified for the integrated MSc and PhD programme, if you have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish bachelor´s degree. Terms of the integrated programme
To be eligible for the integrated scholarship, you are (or are eligible to be) enrolled at one of the faculty’s master programmes in Mathematics.

Students on the integrated programme will enroll as PhD students simultaneously with completing their enrollment in this MSc degree programme.

The duration of the integrated programme is up to five years, and depends on the amount of credits that you have passed on your MSc programme. For further information about the study programme, please see: www.science.ku.dk/phd, “Study Structures”.

Until the MSc degree is obtained, (when exactly two years of the full 3+5 programme remains), the grant will be paid partly in the form of 48 state education grant portions (in Danish: “SU-klip”) plus salary for work (teaching, supervision etc.) totalling a workload of 150 working hours per year.
A PhD grant portion is currently (2024) DKK 6.820 before tax.

When you have obtained the MSc degree, you will transfer to the salary-earning part of the scholarship for a period of two years. At that point, the terms of employment and payment will be according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Responsibilities and tasks in both PhD programmes

  • Complete and pass the MSc education in accordance with the curriculum of the MSc programme  (ONLY when you are attending the integrated MSc and PhD programme)
  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision
  • Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE
  • Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
  • Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
  • Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
  • Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project

The work is part of REFINE, a Horizon Europe-funded project with the main aim to produce electrofuels. REFINE is coordinated by University of Oslo (UiO) and is comprised of a total of nine partners.

The PhD Research Fellow will be mainly involved in the synthesis and development of novel catalysts for use as anodes in water electrolyzers. The catalysts will be characterized by a variety of ex situ and in situ/operando physicochemical techniques, and also modelled by computational methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), depending on the qualifications and interest of the PhD candidate. NuCapCure is a project aiming to launch two novel anticancer modalities based on i) accelerated protons and ii) thermal neutrons. The proton modality will be a hybrid between 1. proton radiotherapy; 2. protondynamic therapy (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-12042-7) and 3. proton boron capture therapy. The neutron modality will be a hybrid between 1. Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) and 2. photosensitizer activation by neutrons (https://www.fringe-fetopen.eu/). The project is modelled on the incurable brain cancer glioblastoma multiforme and its most fascinating aspect is that we intend to “hijack” intracellular pathways to perform the necessary chemistry for us, specifically within cancer cells.The present PhD project will aim to optimize the irradiation regime at the Oslo Cyclotron laboratory at UiO on cells for protondynamic therapy on the photosensitizer PpIX derived from the administration of 5-ALA to cells.

The project will also establish Boron Proton Capture Therapy (BPCT) based on the project bespoke compounds. Specifically, this will include optimizing of the irradiation regime for both protondynamic therapy and BPCT for the maximal cell elimination.

A secondary objective is the determination of the optimal point within the Bragg peak for cell monolayer irradiation. This will be achieved by developing a dosimetry system for the proton irradiation of cells at the Oslo Cyclotron laboratory. The determination of the Bragg peak for the new detectors acquired for this project will be conducted through both simulation and experiments with accelerated protons. Simulations will form a key portion of this process and will enable microdosimetry of the irradiation.

Job description

The successful candidate will be employed on our project entitled “Cuprous Single Sites in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fuel Synthesis by Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction”, a project that addresses the knowledge gap of designed-for-purpose single-site electrocatalysts for CO2 upcycling to fuels.

The candidate will be involved in delivering a new platform for developing advanced materials as efficient electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction by synergistically combining synthesis, theoretical modelling, state-of-the-art characterisation, and performance-analysis. In particular, they will design, synthesise, characterise, and test metal-organic frameworks with cuprous redox centres and establish structure-performance correlations for catalyst optimisation.

We are looking for an excellent candidate with demonstrated lab experience. The candidate will perform the synthesis of functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) built up of well-determined cuprous moieties, and carry out extensive characterisation of these materials using X-ray diffraction and absorption, nuclear magnetic resonance and vibrational spectroscopy, etc.

The candidate will also carry out electrochemical measurements and evaluate the results to gain insight into and develop models of the redox activity and electrocatalytic performance of the so-obtained MOFs. 

Hands-on, practical experience with either electrochemical characterisation, or synthesis and characterisation of materials (ideally porous materials), or both, is desired. As eventually we aim at designing new MOF electrocatalysts with optimum performance, experience in using computational methods, e.g. density functional theory, is of advantage.

The position is full time, for 3 years, and will be carried out at the Department of Chemistry and the Centre for Materials and Nanotechnology of the University of Oslo, based in the Catalysis Group under the supervision of Prof. Dr Petra Ágota Szilágyi and in collaboration with the Electrochemistry Group at the Department of Chemistry and associated with the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN).

About the position

A three-year postdoctoral research fellowship is available at the Department of Mathematics, Section for Mechanics at the University of Oslo (UiO).

Starting date no later than August 15, 2024.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is for a period of three years.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

The position is part of a large techno-convergence project funded by the Research Council of Norway for the development of a new vibration-based soft robot. More specifically, the project has an ambitious aim to demonstrate the feasibility and longevity of the production of vibration-based soft robots. At the core of the project lies an understanding of the elastohydrodynamics of its adhesion cup, requiring the development of a fundamental understanding of the coupling between the fluid flow and the elastic deformations of the soft robot. The postdoctoral fellow will develop the soft robot and perform detailed measurements of its dynamic interface, as well as exploring use of complex materials and actuation principles. The project also involves local collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Sustainability Research (NORSUS) as well as international research groups.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.

Job description

Particle accelerators are engines of discovery in basic physics, photon science, medical research and more. Plasma acceleration promises to make these machines much more compact (and cheaper), which may help in realizing the next particle collider, opening new areas of research such as laboratory astrophysics, and making particle beams more accessible for uses such as medical imaging. However, several challenges remain, including coupling of accelerator modules and suppression of instabilities.

We are looking for an excellent and motivated PhD student to join our team in studying these key issues in plasma acceleration.

The research involves both numerical simulations and experiments at international accelerator laboratories, with particular focus on stabilization mechanisms and beam quality in plasma-wakefield accelerators.

Experiments will be conducted at the FACET-II facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (Stanford, California, USA), where candidate will be based for extended periods of time (6–12 months), embedded in an international team of researchers. Large-scale numerical simulations will be performed on the LUMI supercomputer, which is currently the fastest supercomputer in Europe.

The position is associated with the SPARTA project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) through a Starting Grant. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the PI, Dr. Carl A. Lindstrøm, as well as Prof. Erik Adli, Dr. Kyrre Sjøbæk, and other members of the accelerator group at the High-Energy Physics section at the Department of Physics, University of Oslo. The work involves tight collaboration with international accelerators labs, in particular SLAC, but also CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) and DESY (Hamburg, Germany).

Postdoctoral Fellow in Computational Materials Chemistry

Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Science with about 160 employees. Profiled research are within Materials and Structural Chemistry as well as Analytical Chemistry.

Project description
The aim of the overall project is to provide theoretical tool to comprehensively understand the physical and chemical interaction of 1,2,4-triazoloium-based ionic liquids and their polymers with CO2. It includes but is not limited to molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory computations. The two key focuses are i) how the intermolecular interaction works to enhance the affinity of 1,2,4-triazolium-based ionic liquids and their polymers towards CO2 molecules. The knowledge obtained here will be used to explain the high CO2 uptake and the sorption selectivity of 1,2,4-triazolium-based porous polymers.  ii) how the chemical structure design of the 1,2,4-triazolium-based ionic liquids and their polymers impacts the reaction intermediate thus the reaction mechanism in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxide or other compounds. The knowledge obtained here will be used to explain and predict the structure-property-function relationship of 1,2,4-triazolium-based porous polymers in terms of their catalytic conversion of CO2 to cyclic carbonates and other molecular products.

Main responsibilities
The postdoc will focus on the development of theoretical tools to assist our understanding of physicochemical properties and catalytic performance of 1,2,4-triazolium-based ionic liquids and their polymers towards CO2. Characterization methods, such as infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, are also involved to provide analytic data for mechanistic understanding. Development of collaborative projects with PhD students, master students and other postdocs are also a part of the main responsibilities.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. The selection will be based primarily on scientific excellence and well-documented experience of using computational methods in chemistry. Ability to program is advantageous. Because of the nature of the project, the interest in collaborating with other academic groups and industrial project partners will also have some importance. Good knowledge in English, both written and spoken, is required. The choice of candidate will be based on documented knowledge relevant to the area, published papers, references, interview, and the candidate’s written motivation for seeking the position.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2024-04-01 or as per agreement.

About the position

One position as PhD Research Fellow is available at the Centre for Space Sensors and Systems (CENSSS) at the Department of Technology Systems (ITS).  

The starting date will be set to be as soon as possible and no later than 1 October, 2024.

The appointment is a fulltime position for a period of three years.

CENSSS is a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI), funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and UiO for up to eight years, starting in November 2020. CENSSS has three research partners and nine user partners. CENSSS is located at Kjeller, Norway, where there is a long history of space science and technology dating back to the 1960s.

CENSSS will address challenges and opportunities in science, technology and business related to “New-Space” satellites and systems for Earth Observation, as well as Space Exploration, by focusing on novel sensors, systems and services. CENSSS is operating the RIMFAX ground penetrating radar on the NASA Perseverance Mars rover

CENSSS aims to strengthen competence and capabilities of all its participants in development of space systems. CENSSS plans to develop and launch a research satellite.

The core activity of the Centre shall support Researchers, PhD candidates and Postdocs. They work in close contact with the research and user partners of CENSSS. In 2023, the department started a Master’s degree program in Space systems, in collaboration with other departments at UiO and other organizations.

Job description

Deep space exploration and especially settling humans on extraterrestrial bodies, such as the Moon and Mars, depend among others on the capability to utilize locally available resources, such as water, oxygen, and methane. To identify, localize and characterize the quantity and quality of these resources, different sensors, both spaceborne and on ground are required.

The PhD position shall work with the design, development, and characterization of a novel compact gamma-ray and neutron detector with the long-term goal of mapping planetary surfaces. At this stage of development, the focus will be on terrestrial demonstration and an in-orbit demonstration of the instrument on a CubeSat in Low-Earth orbit. 

The PhD research work will include the following topics and tasks:

  • Modeling of the environment and instrument to identify relevant detector parameters and optimize the design of the instrument
  • Adapt the design of an existing protype or design a new instrument taking into the account the simulated parameters 
  • Characterize and calibrate the prototype in the lab
  • Support the design of test platforms and integrate the instrument into it
  • Perform field test to characterize the instrument performance
  • Dissemination through scientific publications

The specific project description will be developed together with the supervisor and the partners, depending on the skillset and interest of the PhD fellow. It is expected that the PhD fellow will work closely with one or more partners at CENSSS.

UiO is a well-ranked research university where the Department of Technology Systems at Kjeller (ITS) is focused on applied research in sustainable energy, autonomous systems, space, and security. At Kjeller, ITS is co-located with the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (FFI) and the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE), which both offer rich opportunities for collaboration. ITS also has a range of interdisciplinary research collaborations that include the UiO Blindern Campus and Oslo Science City, as well as many other national and international institutions and industries.

ITS offers several master level programmes, alone and jointly with other departments: Renewable energy systems, Cybernetics and autonomous systems, Robotics and intelligent systems, and Information security. ITS also hosts the Centre for Space Sensors and Systems (CENSSS), which incorporates operation of an instrument on the NASA Perseverance rover on Mars. A new master program in Space systems is in the planning stage. The department currently has 9 permanent scientific staff, approximately 35 adjunct staff from the research institutes at Kjeller and from industry, as well as about 20 PhD candidates.

This position is part of an ongoing expansion of the UiO activity at Campus Kjeller. Campus Kjeller is located 20 km northeast of Oslo, between the city center and Oslo Airport. It is a 20 minutes commute with public transportation from Oslo city center to the campus.
