About the position

A fixed-term 100% position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Social Sciences as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in global development studies, affiliated to the Department of Global Development and Planning, for a period of 3 years (eventually 4 years with 25% teaching duty, to be agreed). The position is located at Campus Kristiansand.

The starting date is negotiable with the faculty.

The Faculty of Social Sciences has four departments, the Department of Global Development and Planning, the Department of Information Systems, the Department of Political Science and Management and the Department of Sociology and Social Work.

The Department of Global Development and Planning offers two bachelor programmes, one in Planning and Communication, the other in Global Development Studies. The department also offers a master’s programme in Global Development, Crisis and Change, and one in Planning, Place and Process. We also have a PhD program in Global Development and Planning (hosted at the Faculty of Social Sciences) and an active research environment, divided into research groups. The Department currently hosts 35 academic staff, of which 10 PhD candidates and 1 postdoc.

The position is linked to the Battery Justice Research Network (BATJUST), a global network of social scientists and sustainability scholars on five continents working on issues related to justice and transparency in global lithium-ion battery value and supply chains. BATJUST is hosted by the Department of Global Development and Planning, and is linked to the Sustainability, Digitalisation and Communication focus area of CeDiT –  Centre for Digital Transformation and to the inter-faculty Battery Coast Initiative.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be based at Campus Kristiansand and work closely with BATJUST researchers based in the Department. The successful candidate is expected to conduct global development and critical social science research on global lithium commodity flows in relation to the broader topics of justice and transparency in global lithium-ion battery value and supply chains. BATJUST pursues the study of these chains through a dual approach: A focus on value chains, that studies activities in specific sites of extraction and production (from battery raw materials’ extraction to battery recycling); and a focus on supply chains, which focuses on the physical movement and commodity trading of battery materials at different stages of transformation (from raw materials to refined products, battery components and battery cells).

The plan for the individual research project to be attached to the application should fall under the supply chains focus and should address the following:

  • Be informed by critical social science approaches to the study of global development and green transition, such as, for instance: Political economy, political ecology, global value chains, global production networks, the cultural biographical approach, energy/environmental justice.
  • Focus on the interconnection of social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability of lithium-ion battery supply chains.
  • Produce empirical and theoretical knowledge about inequalities and injustices in global lithium commodity flows linking Latin America, East Asia and Europe, with a specific focus on North-South relations.
  • Map global lithium commodity flows linking Latin America, East Asia and Europe, and encompassing commodities that contain lithium in various stages of transformation in battery supply chains – e.g. from lithium as raw material to refined lithium products, and battery components and battery cells containing lithium.
  • Conduct ethnographic research in key logistics and commodity trading hubs and by following commodities along transport routes connecting Latin America, East Asia and Europe, with a focus on multiple forms of logistics (e.g. cargo ships, trains, trucks) and different kind of trading arrangements.
  • Include multiple actors and their perspectives in the ethnographic study: lithium commodity traders, logistics companies, workers, local communities, national policymakers and global trade institutions.
  • Produce policy recommendations to address inequalities and injustices in these supply chains, with a focus on ways to increase transparency and to foster a more equitable distribution of social, environmental and economic costs and benefits between Global North and Global South. These recommendations should engage with Global South perspectives on topics such as, for instance, global trade reforms and tax justice.

The majority of the time (2 years equivalent) will be dedicated to the individual research project focused on the topics described above. It is anticipated that the research project will be self-driven but involve collaboration with new and existing research partners across disciplines (primarily social sciences, but also engineering, chemistry, and industrial ecology) and across the world, in particular in Europe and Latin America. Researchers in the Department have developed a strong and expanding network on related topics, which the candidate can benefit from and will be expected to expand.

Specific required duties (1 year equivalent) will include contribution to coordination of the BATJUST network hosted at the Department, and to the preparation of research funding proposals on topics related to the critical social science of lithium-ion battery value and supply chains.

A further 1-year equivalent, to be agreed, of the position’s time may be dedicated to teaching at the bachelor and/or master’s level on relevant topics, such as (but not limited to) development studies, political economy and political ecology.

Required qualifications

Further provisions relating to the positions as Postdoctoral Research Fellows can be found in the Regulations Concerning Terms and Conditions of Employment for the post of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow, Research Assistant and Resident.

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant social science field, such as development studies, human geography, anthropology, sociology or other closely related field. Potential applicants must have successfully defended their PhD thesis by the time of the application deadline.
  • Experience with ethnographic research and fieldwork.
  • Experience with research in Global South settings.
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both written and oral.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish to conduct fieldwork interviews and read documents and secondary sources.

Desired qualifications

  • Demonstrated critical social science research experience in one or more of the following areas would be a major advantage: Raw materials’ extraction; raw materials’ sourcing and/or use in industrial production; transport and logistics of mineral or industrial commodities; value or supply chain studies for green technology or other industrial products.
  • Knowledge of global value chain analysis and/or global production networks approach.
  • Experience of carrying out research in Latin America.
  • Working knowledge of other relevant languages for potential fieldwork locations in the project.

Emphasis will be placed upon the plan for the individual research project, and the relevance it has with regard to the subject in question and the research environment at the faculty.

Personal qualities

  • Willingness and availability to conduct long-term multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork across different countries and international transport routes.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and requirements.
  • Good contact and communication with colleagues and students, including good understanding of and experience managing cultural and personal differences.
  • Self-directed, motivated, and independent, but also able to work well in collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and expertise.

Applicants are invited for 1-2 three to four year fulltime positions as PhD Research Fellow at the University of Oslo, Norway. The intended starting date is May 1, 2024.

The positions have a double affiliation with the Centre for Research on Equality in Education (CREATE) and either the Department of Special Needs Education or The Department of Education.

CREATE is an interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway (2023-2033) with the objective to generate novel knowledge about how to reduce inequalities in education, see web site. The interdisciplinary centre integrates researchers with substantive expertise from education, psychology, sociology, economics, genetics and methodological expertise from educational measurement, psychometrics, econometrics, statistics and biostatistics. The PhD Research Fellows are associated with CREATE’s research strand 2: “Intervening on the barriers to equality in education”.

The Department of Special Needs Education offers a Bachelor’s degree in special needs education and five special education majors (among them speech and language therapy and specific learning difficulties) at the Master’s level, in addition to an international Master’s program (Master in Special Needs Education). The department’s lab, Oslo Special Education and Learning Lab (Oslo SPeLL) offers an excellent possibility to incorporate research, innovation and student activities into a clinical context.

The Department of Education offers a Bachelor’s degree in education and four education majors (among them educational psychology) at the Master’s level, in addition to an international Master’s program (Master in Education) and two majors.

More about the position

The PhD fellow is expected to pursue quantitative research in line with the aims of CREATE’s research strand 2: 1) to develop and examine effects from reliable, durable, and educationally meaningful interventions addressing the barriers to equality in skill development, and 2) to design theoretically oriented experiments to examine the causal mechanisms that operate in interventions. CREATE focuses on oral language, literacy (reading and writing), and mathematics as fundamental skills critical to educational success. The current positions are tied to a planned randomized controlled trial that will test the effects of two interventions for upper primary school children (5th -7th grade). Postdoctoral position in the “Understanding (mis)perceptions of economic inequality as a way to reduce it” research project

The Department of Management at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, invites applications for a fulltime 3-year postdoctoral position offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new research project on (mis)perceptions of economic inequality.

The starting date is 1st of July 2024 or subject to mutual agreement.

The research project

This project is funded by AUFF and aims to advance our understanding how specific cognitive biases might be hindering our understanding of economic inequality and contributing to a resistance against wealth redistribution. This project moreover aims to explore how cognitive debiasing can aid in increasing support for wealth redistribution, in turn decreasing economic inequality.

Global economic inequality has surged and led to deleterious societal consequences, including decreased social mobility, reduced economic growth, and increased political polarization. Paradoxically, support for policies mitigating economic inequality remains low, partly due to political differences and polarization. Could cognitive biases be hindering our understanding of economic inequality and contributing to resistance against wealth redistribution? In other words, can a clearer grasp of the scale of this inequality lead us to a more economically equal world?

Awareness of extreme inequality and ways to reduce it, has substantial societal implications. Identifying cognitive mechanisms causing underestimation of economic inequality and countering them can bolster public support for inequality-reducing policies. The research questions will be tested in a series of meta-analytical, lab, online, and field experimental studies. The project is expected to contribute to the fields of psychology and management and will be under the supervision of Assistant Professor Christian Truelsen Elbæk (Aarhus University).

Job description

We are looking for a self-motivated, highly active, and productive researcher. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the overall objectives of the project by being involved in all phases of the project, including formulating research questions, experimental designs, analyses, writing articles, and consulting other researchers of the Lab (currently 1 professor, 2 assistant professors, 2 PhD students, and several research assistants).

The position is research-oriented but may involve teaching assignments.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD relevant to the academic areas of the Department of Management, preferably within one or more of the following areas: Social Psychology, Behavioral Economics, Cognitive Psychology, or another relevant field.

Other requirements include:

  • Publication experience in high-ranking journals in psychology and management
  • Experience with designing, analyzing, and reporting experimental or survey research
  • Experience with field studies, consumer panel surveys, lab experiments, and the combination of these (multi-methods studies)
  • Knowledge and expertise in one or many of the following areas: psychology, behavioral economics, and judgment and decision making
  • Excellent research skills, including advanced statistical and methodological knowledge (experience with programming of experiments, statistical methods such as individual models of preferences or models of decision-making processes, and programming skills in R and/or Python)
  • Experience in teaching
  • Experience in open science, preregistered experiments, and meta-analyses
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English, with a certified proficiency in English
  • Excellent knowledge of office and statistical software
  • Motivation to work independently as well as cooperatively in an international team

Deadline

All applications must be made online and received by April 30, 2024.

Postdoctoral position in research project on harassment and stress in politics at Aarhus University

The Department of Political Science at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, invites applications for one 2-year fulltime postdoctoral positions to join a new research project on working conditions of politicians in Denmark. The project is directed by professor, Helene Helboe Pedersen.

The starting date is May 1st, 2024 but can be flexible subject to mutual agreement.

The research project

The position is part of the project “POLPRESS”. In the 3-year project funded by Trygfonden (2.9 million DKR), we aim to describe the experiences of harassment and stress among Danish local and national politicians and to understand the consequences of such experiences for the individual politician and democracy. Unfortunately, political harassment and stress appear to be on the rise in many democracies. The experiences of harassment and stress are unequally distributed across politicians depending among other factors on gender, public visibility, and political attitudes. The prominence and uneven distribution cause concerns regarding democratic recruitment and representation. We will initiate a research that will develop ways to measure experiences of harassment and stress and to study how politicians are assisted in handling such experiences and thus how to potentially moderate the possible consequences of silencieng or pushing politicians out of politics.

Methodologically, the project plans to combine survey, biographical, and social media data to describe experiences of harassment and stress in politics and to understand variation across politicians and their coping strategies. Furthermore, we will run surveys among voters to study their perceptions of harassment and stress in politics and how this influence their willingness to participate in politics.

The project contributes to the general fields of research in representation, political parties, legislative behaviour, and political communication.

Job description

The postdoctoral researcher will be employed as part of a research group and is expected to engage in collaborative research with the research team. The applicant is expected to be present at the Department of Political Science at Aarhus University at least three days a week on average and participate in project meetings as well as be part of the broader research environment at the Department.

The postdocs will be expected to take a leading role in developing, designing as well as coordinating research projects and publishing research in high impact journals.

Moreover, as part of the research group, the postdocs are expected to provide support for project-related research, organizational, and administrative tasks. Given the key importance of the survey among hard to reach politicians, experience with interacting with elite actors and designing surveys will be positively evaluated

As the empirical focus in on Danish politicians, the postdoc is expected to be able to communicate with survey respondents and organizational actors in Danish.

The successful applicants will be part of a research project of high societal and research relevance and of a vibrant and supportive research team with an informal atmosphere. There will be excellent opportunities for intellectual development and mentoring as well as developing an independent research agenda within the context of the project.

The project offers funding for conferences, additional training, and good opportunities for developing a strong academic network.

In addition to the outlined research tasks, the positions entail teaching the equivalent of one course per year. Depending on the applicants’ prior teaching experience and the need for the applicants’ teaching capacity in the relevant years, a one-year extension in return for additional teaching might be negotiable. This extension will be decided by the Head of Department no later than one year after employment. Salary is highly competitive and set according to the Danish pay schedule.

Your qualifications

Candidates must hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in Political Science or another field relevant to the project. In addition to this the applicant should

  • have an interest in understanding working conditions for political representatives
  • have an interest in conducting collaborative research.
  • have experience with designing and administering surveys and preferably some experience in quantitative content analysis.
  • have an excellent command of spoken and written English and Danish

PhD scholarships on Debt Behavior at Center for Economic Behaviour and Inequality (CEBI), UCPH

The Department of Economics and CEBI is pleased to announce openings for two fully-funded PhD scholarships as part of the research project, 'Labour market effects and debt re-organization from wage garnishment.'

In a financial landscape where households owe a staggering 150 billion DKK to the Danish government, imagine the challenge of collecting unpaid debts from countless individuals. Our mission is to unveil the stories of these debtors, decipher their strategies for overcoming financial challenges, and explore the broader impacts. Do they find themselves caught in a web of debt elsewhere, struggling to break free? How does wage garnishment affect their labor supply, and what ripple effects does it send through their families? Moreover, how does this massive debt overhang shape inequality in society?

To answer these questions, you will work with extensive administrative datasets, providing a unique opportunity to delve into the intricate dynamics of how individuals navigate between debt, work, and family.

Join the project and collaborate with a team of senior researchers consisting of Søren Leth-Petersen (Professor), Peer Skov (Associate Professor), and Jonas Maibom (Associate Professor). Successful candidates will not only work closely with senior researchers but also have the chance to pursue independent research. We invite you to include an outline of a potential independent research project in your application, focusing on studying individuals' debt to the government. Your outline should articulate and justify a research question, as well as discuss data sources and empirical designs to address it.

As a PhD student you will be affiliated with Center for Economic Behavior and inequality, CEBI, a center of Excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The main goal of CEBI is to provide cutting-edge empirical research on the role of behavior in generating inequality and its underlying sources. CEBI combines several fields and methods: Public Economics, Labor Economics, Health Economics, Behavioral Economics, Household Finance, Political Economics, Microeconometrics, Experimental and Survey Methods and Structural Modelling. The current group includes 14 senior researchers, 11 junior researchers, 12 PhD students, 7 research assistants and 7 international researchers from New York University, Pompeu Fabra University, Princeton University and University of Zürich. For further information about CEBI see www.econ.ku.dk/cebi.

The deadline for submitting application is March 1, 2024. The expected starting date of the PhD position is September 1, 2024. Scholarships can be either 5+3, 4+4 or 3+5 (see below).

Doctoral Research Fellowship in the History of Capitalism

Doctoral Research Fellowship in the History of Capitalism

Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History

Job description

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in History is available at the Department of Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History (IAKH), University of Oslo.

The position is associated with the Research Group “History of Capitalism”, and in particular the Norwegian Research Council (NRC) funded project “Persistence or change? Lessons from the introduction of enhetsskolen in Denmark and Norway

More about the position

The project contributes to the global debate about how to overcome today’s societal challenges in terms of educational inequalities and restricted educational systems by turning to history to study the long-term effects of Denmark and Norway’s inclusive school system: enhetsskolen (unity school). We follow the creation of the systems from the late 19th century over a period of 150 years and evaluate the early reforms. A Scandinavian Educational Database (1800-1950) is being developed based on student grades and graduate biographies. This Database is being linked to the Norwegian Historical Population Register and Link Lives of Denmark. Using individual level data on the complete life spans of the entire populations we examine variation in the timing of educational reforms, and regional and national variations in their implementation.

Prospective applicants need to submit a proposal that is closely aligned with the overarching NRC project. However, the proposal must stand as an independent and separate historical project in its own right. Historical topics of particular interest are (not exclusively) the building of education systems, education and travelling or migration, education and industrial development and education and knowledge transfer. While the primary geographic scope of the NRC project is Scandinavia, the project also welcomes and encourages a focus on additional geographical areas.

Applicants are asked to clearly state in their project proposal (3 to 5 pages) why they have chosen a particular approach and case study as well as the location of the sources they intend to use.

The successful applicant will be part of an international and interdisciplinary group of researchers in history, social sciences, and computer science at the University of Oslo, UiT the Arctic University of Norway, the University of Southern Denmark, and TU Dortmund University. We encourage interested candidates to contact Kristin Ranestad for more information about the project.

The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development. Read more about the doctoral degree.

The start date for the position will be in the autumn semester 2024. The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant.

Qualification requirements

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in history, economic and social history, economics, or any other relevant discipline. The Master’s degree must have been obtained and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English, see Language requirements
  • Excellent reading knowledge of the source languages relevant for the PhD project.

Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Work assignments

Employment as a postdoctoral researcher in economics is available at the Division of Economics in the Department of Management and Engineering. This position is funded by the Catharina Högbom and Michael Cocozza Foundation for Research and Cultural Purposes in Linköping Municipality. While the research direction for the position is open and encompasses all areas in economics, including financial economics, it should be related to at least one goal in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The specific focus will be determined through consultation between the hired candidate and the division. Your tasks will include:

  • Independently developing, taking responsibility for, and implementing a research program in economics with the aim of achieving international recognition.
  • Producing and publishing research results of high scientific quality in respected peer-reviewed scientific journals within the field of economics.
  • Actively participating in seminars, discussion groups, and other activities organized within the division.
  • Presenting research findings at conferences and research seminars.
  • Serving as a competence resource within your area of expertise for the division.
  • Utilizing opportunities for teaching and supervision when they support career development and align with the research direction.
  • Seeking external research funds for future research projects.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are seeking applicants who have a PhD in economics.

The primary basis of assessment will be the applicant’s documented scientific proficiency as well as the quality of the planned research activity, as described in the research plan. Therefore, your application should include a research plan that outlines how you propose to employ a 2-year postdoctoral position. It is a requirement that the planned research is related to at least one of the goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The ability to conduct independent research, as well as experience in participating in research collaborations, are also significant merits. It is particularly meritorious if you have documented experience in theoretical research and plan to continue this during your postdoctoral tenure.

As a person, you are confident, independent, and structured. You have an excellent ability to solve complex problems and communicate effectively. Commitment, ability to cooperate, and good personal qualities are highly valued. Strong proficiency in English, both in speech and writing, is a prerequisite.

The workplace

You will be employed at the Division of Economics in the Department of Management and Engineering. The division consists of approximately 30 people, and its operations encompass research as well as education at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The research at the division is characterized by interdisciplinarity through collaboration with other research environments, a clear relation to current societal problems and interaction with society, as well as a distinct policy orientation. The division conducts research in areas directly related to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Examples of these research areas include the economics of discrimination and inequality, sustainable finance, health economics, and transport economics.
