Postdoctoral Researcher in tumor immunology

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for an ambitious postdoc with solid single-cell immunology skills to join our highly accomplished team of immunologists in a project funded by the Swedish Cancer Society. We offer a stimulating environment in a rapidly moving research frontier.

Your mission

The Mjösberg group studies the development, regulation and function of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), in humans, and how these cells contribute to pathology in mucosal organs such as the lung and gut. The studies are translational as they involve advanced basic molecular and cellular immunological investigations of precious human tissue samples to discover novel disease mechanisms, therapy targets and improved strategies for personalized treatment. The Mjösberg group consists of two team leaders, two PhD students, five postdocs and a lab manager working closely together with clinical partners at several Swedish hospitals and laboratory facilities at Science for Life Laboratories (SciLifeLab), Karolinska Institutet and abroad.

The Mjösberg group is internationally recognized as a leader in the field through several high impact publications in recent years (Nat Comm 2020, Cell Res 2021, Sci Imm 2022, Cell Rep Med 2023 etc). In particular, the postdoc will continue the successful line of investigations utilizing single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to dissect human intestinal mucosal lymphocyte biology in health and disease.

The project has already generated scRNA-seq data as well as multicolor flow cytometry data of human intratumoral lymphocytes and stromal cells in colorectal cancer. The postdoc will now analyze these data and perform functional experiments (in vitro differentiation, co-cultures etc) together with another postdoc in the team and gastrosurgeons at Karolinska University Hospital. As this is a team effort, excellent communication skills are essential, as is proven ability to work in multidisciplinary teams. It is expected that the postdoc also supervise students and other researchers if necessary, as well as contribute to common lab duties.

The postdoc will be a part of the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM), Karolinska Institutet, which is a nationally leading and internationally competitive center for human translational immunology and infectious diseases research. The center consists of approximately 25 graduate students and 25 postdocs organized around 14 independent research groups.

This PhD position is part of CASCADE: Computational Analysis of Semantic Change Across Different Environments (MSCA Doctoral Network). CASCADE aims to train early-stage researchers to develop and apply innovative methodologies for Computational Analysis of Semantic Change Across Different Environments (CASCADE), i.e. to identify, analyse and interrogate how meaning is expressed in language in diverse contexts, with a shared focus on the impact of time (diachronic text analytics). Researchers in the network will encounter different theories of, and approaches to meaning (structuralist, relational, distributional, cognitive, encyclopaedic, social) and learn how these affect the criteria for judging success in text analysis.

MSCA Doctoral Networks are research and training programmes with the goal of training highly skilled doctoral candidates, stimulating their creativity, enhancing their innovation capacities and boosting their employability in the long term. For CASCADE this means responding to a skills deficit in the academic, public and commercial sectors: the need for people able to retrieve, critically evaluate and make better use of the large volumes of textual data that characterise our contemporary information society (the ‘data deluge’).

Being part of an MSCA Doctoral Network means taking part in networking activities and spending time abroad. Each PhD candidate will be co-supervised by two academics within the consortium; they will be based at one of the universities of CASCADE and visit the university of their co-supervisor for a research stay, as well as have a shorter internship at an associated partner. They will be expected to participate in full in the training programme, consisting of summer schools, workshops, a regular online seminar, and other activities.

CASCADE is committed to creating an environment in which all talents can develop to their maximum potential, regardless of gender, age, cultural origin, nationality or disability. We particularly encourage candidates from traditionally underrepresented groups to apply.

CASCADE is advertising positions for 10 candidates within its framework, who will be based at 5 participating universities. Applications for each position must be submitted separately. It is possible to apply for more than one position, in which case the applicant must send a separate email to james.osullivan@ucc.ie stating this and indicating their preference. The recruitment process will be done centrally by the CASCADE selection committee.

Rather than geographical limitations, emphasis is expected to be put on transnational contacts and events. The researcher is expected to carry out an independent research project under supervision and as a result publish two academic articles that analyse aesthetic considerations and the pious reflection behind the artwork, including its use of Islamic resources. The documentation can hopefully result in a small digital exhibition.

Doctoral student in Chemistry

Ref no: ORU 2.1.1-01415/2024

Örebro University and the School of Science and Technology are looking for a doctoral student for the doctoral programme in Chemistry, concluding with a licentiate degree.
Start date: Spring 2024.

Doctoral students

Project description

The PhD candidate will participate in a project with a focus on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and extractable organic fluorine (EOF) to develop novel porous carbon materials for reducing total PFAS emission including cost-benefit analysis and bioavailability of immobilized PFAS to terrestrial organisms. In this project, we want to develop new porous carbons (NPCs) from rice husks to reduce the leakage of PFAS from known point sources by either removing them from wastewater or immobilizing them in contaminated soil. This is to avoid PFAS reaching, for example, our drinking water. The removal efficiency of the NPCs will be evaluated by measuring total PFAS rather than measuring a few PFAS. The availability of PFAS in soil will be investigated by measuring total PFAS in earthworms and vegetables growing in soil treated with NPC. A cost-benefit analysis will be conducted to understand the problem-to-solution cost. Parts of the research project work may need to be conducted in Japan. The successful candidate should demonstrate knowledge in organic analytical chemistry and have interest in mass spectrometric analysis and multivariate statistics. Experience with sample preparation, relevant oxidation process, LC-MS/MS, Q-TOF, and combustion ion chromatography analyses, as well as working in an interdisciplinary research environment are valuable merits.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Leo Yeung (principal supervisor) and Anna Kärrman (assistant supervisor).

The programme and the doctoral studentship

The doctoral programme consists of courses and an independent research project that you will present in a licentiate thesis. The programme concludes with a licentiate degree and comprises 120 credits, which corresponds to two years of full-time study. There is a possibility to continue to a doctoral degree (in total 240 credits) providing that additional funding is available.

Our ambition is for your doctoral studies to be stimulating and purposeful throughout the programme until you have obtained your degree. A thorough introduction will therefore get you off to a good start and provide a solid foundation on which you can build your studies. As a doctoral student at Örebro University, you will be offered a specially tailored seminar series, covering matters ranging from doctoral programme rules and careers to support during the study period and networking.

The place on the programme is linked to a full-time doctoral studentship for the duration of the study programme, which corresponds to four years of full-time study. More information on doctoral studentships, part-time studies and part-time doctoral studentships can be found in the Regulations Handbook. The initial salary for a doctoral studentship is SEK 30 300 a month.

Entry requirements and selection

Postdoc vacancy HUM

The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for a Postdoc in Cultural Studies starting on 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is a fixed-term position for 17 months.

Job content
The postdoc will be connected to the Novo Nordic Foundation-funded research project Twisting the Fabric of Space: The Art and Politics of the Hidden which has Kasper Opstrup as its Primary Investigator. An interest in magic, folklore, and the legacies of surrealism are conspicuous in contemporary art and theory worlds. Twisting the Fabric of Space investigates this phenomenon through detailed analyses of a select group of contemporary artists as well as a historical analysis of earlier 20th century artistic practices situated between art, politics, and esotericism, a concatenation that constitutes what the project develops as ‘weird entanglements.’ The project is hosted by the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies at UCPH.

The postdoc focuses primarily on the contemporary perspective, relying on some of the data from the project’s historical perspective to investigate the use and misuse of facts and fictions in contemporary art and theory worlds with an emphasis on worldbuilding and what loosely can be referred to as conspiracy theories, i.e., fictions that want to make themselves real. Besides writing at least one peer-reviewed article and presenting its data at an international conference, the postdoc will be part of organising a conference and an exhibition as part of the project, meaning that good organisational skills will be required.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as a postdoc presumes research qualifications on at least PhD level.

For more about postdoc positions and qualification requirements, see the Ministry of Education and Research’s Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

Additionally, the postdoc is presumed to have had a proven engagement with the relationship between art, politics, and the occult and/or symbolism, surrealism, and situationism. The postdoc is also expected to have experience with organising events, conferences, exhibitions or related activities.

  • Non-peer-reviewed publications:
    • Publications disseminating research findings, etc.

Applicants can attach a maximum of three publications. The publication dates must be clearly marked on the list. The selected publications must be uploaded as attachments and numbered 1–3.

  2. Documentation of teaching competencies/teaching portfolio (see the UCPH guidelines for teaching portfolios here) and other work on the dissemination of research.

Only material in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and English will be evaluated.

Applicants will primarily be assessed in relation to their research qualifications, including their publications, ability to conduct independent research and participate in research collaborations, and their experience of research management. In addition, the applicant’s research plan and research potential will be assessed in relation to the overall project described above.

Teaching qualifications are not a requirement, but if the postdoc is expected to teach, then documented teaching experience can be included in the overall assessment.

The recruitment process
Once the deadline for applications has expired, the head of department will consider advice from the appointment committee and select applicants for assessment. All applicants will be notified whether they have been shortlisted. The Dean will then set up an expert assessment committee to consider the applications. In addition, a total pension contribution of 17.1% of salary and pensionable supplements will be allocated. It will be possible to negotiate further supplements on the basis of qualifications.
