Centre for Cyber Security is looking for candidates for an industrial Ph.D. investigating future IT technologies

Do you want to be a part of an ambitious team working dedicatedly towards a digitally safe Denmark based on new innovative technologies?
Do you have knowledge about IT and cyber security? Can you produce new results and disseminate your knowledge?

We are looking for candidates, who through academic research in cyber security want to help secure Denmark against vulnerabilities present in tomorrow’s IT technologies.

You will be given challenges and room to grow
Centre for Cyber Security (CFCS) is currently starting-up a new section, that will act as a centre of knowledge for aspects regarding cyber security in future technologies. The section shall be at the forefront of new technologies with a focus on both scientific – and practical experience aspects. When counselling authorities and companies this knowledge is necessary for both us and them to be able to be at the cutting edge of new means of attacks and vulnerabilities.

As our new colleague in the section, you will contribute experience and research to help ensure that CFCS is at the cutting edge of new trends and security aspects technologies.

The section shall have a knowledge intensive and research-based approach, as well as establish cooperation with educational institutions and companies. Moreover, the section will be CFCS’ link to Danish national and international research and development forums, for new technologies and cyber security.

The section will address the following research fields:

  • Quantum computing, post-Quantum cryptography
  • Development of secure systems e.g. techniques for safe software development including formal methods, program and protocol analysis, DevSecOps, blockchain
  • Artificial Intelligence including machine learning and adversarial machine learning
  • Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded security such as security in critical systems and infrastructure, protocol design for IoT devices
  • Cloud/edge computing, including web applications (Xaas – Everything-as-a-service), security in digital processes and microservices
  • 5G, 6G and other advanced networks, e.g. LoRaWAN
  • Network security and anomaly detection

    In order to stay at the forefront of the technological development the section’s research focus’ will be dynamic.

You and your background are important
To be considered as a Ph.D. student your academic education must be equivalent to a MSc and you must have written or be in the process of writing you thesis in one of the above-mentioned topics. Furthermore, you must have demonstrated a high academic standard in order to be accepted as a Ph.D. student at a Danish university.

Additionally, you must be able to recognise yourself in the following:

  • You are interested in technology and have a good all-round understanding and insight of systems
  • You can work independently and outreaching, as well as make use of your knowledge in contexts that are non-academic
  • You have good interpersonal skills, also when it comes to colleagues with a different academic background than your own
  • You are good at working alone as well as in teams and you know that different perspectives and constructive feedback can help improve your work
  • You see the big picture and work structured and respect deadlines
  • You have good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • You can speak and write English and Danish fluently, however, Danish is not a requirement but an advantage
  • You actively contribute to a good working environment where we enjoy working together
  • You see yourself working in a new section where many aspects, processes and methods are not yet in place
  • You will also a part of your time be at the university/Ph.D. school for collaborating with research staff, for courses, lab experiments and for supervision

Your new workplace
The Danish Defence Intelligence Service (Forsvarets Efterretningstjeneste (DDIS)) is both Denmark’s foreign and military intelligence agency, the Danish military’s security agency and the national IT security authority, that ensures a strong cyber defence.

DDIS works to protect Denmark and the Danish democracy. We gain our knowledge through focused intelligence work and use it to asses, combat and counsel current and future threats.  We do this by obtaining and analysing information about situations in foreign countries that are relevant to Denmark and Danish interest.

DDIS’s Centre for Cyber Security constitute Denmark’s national defence against cyber threats and we work for a digitally safe Denmark. We take part in discovering and handling cases where Danish interest are exposed to cyber-attacks and we gather, develop and share knowledge which can prevent future attacks.

Your salary package depends on your qualifications
Salary and terms of employment follows the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the relevant professional organization, depending on your educational background. Additionally, it will be possible to negotiate a pay supplement according to qualifications. The average working hours is 37 hours per week including a paid lunch break. The position includes a pension scheme paid by DDIS. As an employee in DDIS, you are subject to some specific conditions. It is a requirement that you can get a security clearance and can maintain the clearance throughout your employment.

You will be employed in a temporary position and is expected to find a supervisor and prepare a project plan as well as ensure enrollment in a Ph.D. school within the first 3 months of employment. It is a requirement that you are enrolled as a Ph.D. student in order to be employed as a Ph.D. student by us.

It will either be a 4 year or a 3 year Ph.D. arrangement, which will be clarified as part of the project plan and it will a.o. depend on whether you have finished your MSc.

    • Curriculum Vitae
    • A short description of earlier teaching and research experience, including a list of publications.
    • Diploma
    • Excel sheet with translation of grades to the Danish grading system

Applications will be assessed in March, June and September and you may apply before the 1st of each of these months to be considered in the following assessment.
