PhD Research Fellow in Acoustics

PhD Research Fellow in Acoustics

UiB – Knowledge that shapes society

Through robust and close interaction with the world around us – globally, nationally and locally – we shall be instrumental in building a society based on knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Do you want to take part in shaping the future?

PhD Research Fellow in Acoustics

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in acoustics at the Department of Physics and Technology (IFT) at the University of Bergen (UiB). The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years, with employment from 1 September 2023.

The position is subject to financing by UiB grant under the Smart Ocean Centre for Research-based Innovation, hosted by UiB.

We offer an opportunity to join one of the leading research and innovation clusters within marine instrumentation and operations, in an exciting time for marine life, environment, and observation technologies. In a consortium counting about 20 research, industry and public partners, the Smart Ocean Centre focuses on flexible and cost-effective solutions for monitoring and management of a productive and healthy ocean.

The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the Acoustics Research group at UiB/IFT, addressing cutting-edge research in experimental, theoretical, and numerical acoustics, currently making up a group of 19 people (permanent employees and emeriti, postdoctoral fellow, PhD and master students). The group focuses on fundamental research and collaborates with external partners on applications, with interests spanning a broad range of areas (including guided ultrasonic waves, ultrasonic fiscal flow measurement of oil and gas, marine/fisheries acoustics, distributed acoustic sensing, and material/fluid characterization). The group is closely linked to two Centres for Research-based Innovation, SFI Smart Ocean – Technology for Monitoring and Management of a Healthy and Productive Ocean; and SFI CRIMAC – Marine Acoustic Abundance Estimation and Backscatter Classification.

About the project/work tasks:

The PhD project is part of the Smart Ocean Centre. The overall aim of the Centre is to create a wireless observation system for multi-parameter monitoring of underwater environments and installations, based on a flexible and autonomous smart sensor network.

In contrast to electromagnetic and optical waves, acoustic waves travel great distances underwater, and therefore acoustic sensor technology forms the basis for many remote sensing systems designed for monitoring ocean man-made sources and marine creatures. As such acoustic sensor systems can satisfy a range of ocean monitoring applications, from monitoring the integrity of offshore wind farms and other industrial subsea installations, as well as in monitoring shipping traffic, the influence of ocean noise on animal behaviour, and climate studies.

In recent years, Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) has emerged as a technology for making spatially resolved measurements of acoustic disturbances using fibre optics. In addition to facilitating acoustic measurements over large length scales, DAS is particularly interesting for ocean applications because it can utilize the same ubiquitous optical fibres found on the ocean floor, and on installations.

The PhD candidate will work on the development and understanding of fibre optic DAS technologies for novel ocean applications. An important element will be how to use and get value out of existing fibre optical infrastructures used for different purposes (e.g., subsea communication cable networks). The project will cover aspects including development and operation of NORCE’s Optoelectronic DAS hardware, as well as the development of data processing techniques for interpreting the large data streams (~1 GB/s). In addition to working with real-world DAS data, the project will utilize small scale experiments in combination with mathematical and numerical modelling. These activities will contribute to improved fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms involved in fibre-optic detection of acoustic signals from different ocean sources. The candidate will develop cutting edge sensing technology that will help ocean industries to operate in a safe and efficient way, and at the same time provides valuable knowledge about the marine environment that helps authorities set appropriate regulations for sustainable operations.

The PhD work is to be carried out in cooperation with Centre partners, co-supervised by NORCE and Tampnet. The candidate is expected to participate in the guidance of master students.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in physics or equivalent discipline. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam by 20.06.2023. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • Good skills in measurement physics laboratory/field work involving acquisition and processing of electronic signals, is a requirement.
  • Good programming skills is a requirement, e.g., using Matlab, Python, LabVIEW.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Experience from one or several of the following areas is an advantage:

  • Good knowledge of acoustics, e.g., underwater acoustics.
  • Good knowledge of acoustic laboratory and/or field measurements.
  • Good skills in numerical modelling within acoustics.
  • Good knowledge of optoelectronic systems and sensors, particularly distributed sensor systems.
  • Experience from finite-element modelling of acoustic wave propagation in solid and fluid media (programming, use, or both), e.g., using COMSOL Multiphysics.
  • Experience from mathematical-numerical modelling of acoustic waveguide propagation in solid-fluid media (e.g., layered solid-fluid media, or guided acoustic/ultrasonic waves).
  • Experience from modelling and data analysis related to Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS).
  • Good knowledge of digital signal processing.
  • Good command of the Norwegian language.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

PhD Research Fellow in Informatics: Visual Data Scienceto Master Complex Simulation Ensembles

PhD Research Fellow in Informatics: Visual Data Scienceto Master Complex Simulation Ensembles

UiB – Knowledge that shapes society

Through robust and close interaction with the world around us – globally, nationally and locally – we shall be instrumental in building a society based on knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Do you want to take part in shaping the future?

PhD Research fellow in Informatics

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Informatics at the UiB’s Department of Informatics.  The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year.

The position is connected to the project “Visual Data Science to Master Complex Simulation Ensembles”, which is a collaboration between the University of Bergen and the University of Stuttgart in Germany.  The planned research will be done in the context of CEDAS, UiB’s Center for Data Science.

About the department

Digitization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education makes informatics play an increasingly important role in the development of the society. Research and education in informatics are crucial for the digital transformation of the society to succeed. The Department of Informatics contributes to this through eight research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level. The groups are within algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, visualization and informatics didactics. The Department offers education at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The Department is in rapid growth regarding its number of students, research directions, and employees. We have about 900 students and about 150 employees, among which 37 are Faculty members and 70 are PhD candidates. We have established the Center for Data Science (CEDAS) as an important extension of our research and education activities and an interdisciplinary cooperation of data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, besides additional related topics and applications.

About the project/work tasks:

Our employees are expected to contribute to excellence with high-quality research and teaching.  The working environment for this position is (1) UiB’s Center for Data Science, CEDAS, (2) the involved research groups of visualization and machine learning, as well as (3) the cooperation between UiB and the University of Stuttgart.  Our cooperation with UiB’s Department of Geosciences is also important for this position.  The PhD project is advised by Prof. H. Hauser (visual data science) and co-advised by Assoc.-Prof. N. Blaser (machine learning) as well as Prof. Th. Spengler (meteorology).  Profs. Th. Ertl and M. Sedlmair from the Univ. of Stuttgart are also involved in the planned research.  The project synopsis is:To understand inherent uncertainties in weather prediction, it is common to consult stochastically perturbed simulation ensembles with highly detailed ensemble members. Extracting relevant conclusions from such ensembles is very challenging and depends on a successful condensation of the data. Especially when aiming at an interpretation of an entire ensemble in terms of domain-relevant features, such as cyclones, fronts, rain, etc., summarization is very difficult and only possible on the basis of expert knowledge. We foresee that new visual data science methods from this project will significantly support the study of such rich ensembles.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or an equivalent education) in Computer Science, or must have submitted their Master’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the Master’s degree (or an equivalent degree) has been awarded.

PhD Research Fellowship in connection with the project Extending Digital Narrative (XDN)

PhD Research Fellowship in connection with the project Extending Digital Narrative (XDN)

UiB – Knowledge that shapes society

Through robust and close interaction with the world around us – globally, nationally and locally – we shall be instrumental in building a society based on knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Do you want to take part in shaping the future?

PhD Research Fellowship

The Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies invites applications for one (1) PhD position connected to the project Extending Digital Narrative at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies, commencing from September 1st, 2023, or as agreed. The appointment is for a fixed term of three (3) years.

About the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies

The Department offers research-based teaching within a wide span of study programs, including Digital Culture, Art History, Theatre Studies, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Scandinavian Languages and Literature, Old Norse Studies, and Norwegian as a Second Language and Norwegian Languages Courses for international students and employees at the University of Bergen. From the fall of 2023 onwards, the Department will be proud host to the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN), a Norwegian Center of Excellence.

The successful candidate will have their regular workplace at the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN). The center focuses on algorithmic narrativity, new environments and materialities, and the shifting cultural contexts in which digital narratives are received and processed. We investigate the ways that the interactions of human authors and non-human agents result in new narrative forms, how the materialities of digital narratives have changed over time, and how cultural contexts are reshaping the use and function of digital narrative.

About the project “Extending Digital Narrative”

“Extending Digital Narrative” (XDN) is a four-year project funded by the Norwegian Research Council. XDN will break new ground in electronic literature research by extending its scope to encompass narratives produced in new and emerging platforms, providing a new framework for understanding and developing digital narratives, and a strong foundation for further research. We need to understand how these new platforms can function as enabling technologies and become environments for narrative exploration.

XDN will address that need by exploring and analyzing three emerging modes of digital narrative, each of which results from substantial recent technological advances:

1. Immersive: Extended Reality (XR) narratives including virtual reality in constructed/modeled narrative environments, “Metaverse” augmented reality environments, and works of 360° cinema that situate the viewer within an immersive visual field.

2. Conversational: In the past decade conversational interfaces that the user engages through actual spoken transactions with a computational system have become more commonplace. New forms of digital narrative based on conversational interfaces are now being produced for network-connected devices such as Amazon Echo and Google Home Assistant.

3. Generative: Machine generated or AI-driven narratives that are produced algorithmically, blending to varying degrees human authorship and computational text generation.

About the PhD project

Applicants must propose a PhD project to investigate new forms of digital narratives that use emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Extended Reality (XR), and/or conversational interfaces from a humanities perspective. Both critical and creative research approaches will be encouraged. There is some flexibility in the topic of the dissertation, which will be developed in collaboration with the XDN project leader during the candidate’s first semester.

The PhD candidate will work with the project leader Scott Rettberg, a postdoc researcher affiliated with the project, student assistants, and other researchers affiliated with the Center for Digital Narrative.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian master’s degree or an equivalent foreign degree in a relevant discipline such as digital culture, digital humanities, literary studies, game studies or media studies. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded at the time of application. Applicants who do not have a Norwegian master’s degree will be evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT).
  • The applicant must both be able to work independently in a well-structured way and have good collaboration skills.
  • The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Experience in any of the following areas is considered an advantage:

  • Academic research in digital narratives in the MA thesis or other work, particularly research relevant to the focus areas of XDN.
  • Creative development work in digital media.
  • Past publication of research or research communication.
  • Digital humanities methods.

Applicants must submit a proposal for a research project that will result in a doctoral dissertation.

Applicants will be evaluated according to admission requirements in The Faculty of Humanities’ PhD Program pt. 2.1.

In assessing the applications, the academic quality and feasibility of the proposed PhD project and the academic qualifications of the candidate will be considered. Further emphasis is also placed on strategic considerations, motivation, and the applicant’s personal eligibility.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology (www.sars.no) in the research group headed by Dr. Pawel Burkhardt. The position is for a period of 3 years and is funded by an ERC consolidator grant (ORIGINEURO). The Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen and is partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) (www.embl.de). The place of work will be at the Sars Centre. The preferred but negotiable starting date is January 2023.

About the project/work tasks:

The Burkhardt group combines comparative biological systems in the laboratory to understand when and how first synapses, neurons and nervous systems evolved. The group is particularly interested in studying the nervous system of ctenophores. Ctenophores – strong candidates for being the sister-group to all other animals – are beautiful, but still mysterious marine animals. Given their phylogenetic position characterizing the nervous system of ctenophores promises to reveal fundament insights into the evolutionary origin of neurons. We are looking for a highly self-motivated and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Fellow with interests in evolutionary biology, neurobiology and electron microscopy. The project will focus on the ultrastructural characterization of the nervous system of an entire ctenophore. The successful candidate will undertake research using 3D electron microscopy and CLEM to reveal ctenophore connectome(s) and will work in close association with the group leader and other lab members with the aim to contribute to the further development of the project in line with her/his interests.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree in fields related to the project and must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded
  • Strong motivation/enthusiasm to perform research at an internationally competitive level
  • Practical experience in image segmentation and 3D reconstructions of serial EM sections is required
  • Practical experience with serial sectioning and electron microscopy techniques (TEM, SBFSEM) is highly desirable
  • Practical experience in situ hybridization (ISH), immunofluorescence (IF) microscopy and correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) is highly desirable
  • Specific experience in working with marine invertebrates (ctenophores, cnidarians, sponges) is beneficial, but not essential
  • The ability to work both independently and to cooperate with others in a structured manner is essential
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English
