Over 2 billion lightning events occur in Earth’s atmosphere every year, which might even increase in the future with global warming. In spite of this, the effects of lightning on the chemistry of the atmosphere are not taken into account today and has been studied to a limited extent.
This PhD work is taking place within a new research project, in collaboration between the Department of Chemistry of KTH and the Lightning Research group of Uppsala University, to investigate the effects of different types of lightning discharges on the chemistry of the atmosphere, in particular on the transformations of organic compounds.
The PhD work will consist in performing experiments, both at the Lightning Research facility at Uppsala University and in the laboratory at KTH, to characterize the reactions resulting from different types of lightning discharges (products, mechanisms, etc…). The results will allow to identify and quantify the contributions of lightning to atmospheric chemistry and potentially, over long term, on climate.
Supervision: Profs. Barbara Noziere and Åsa Emmer are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
- passed a second cycle degree (for example a master’s degree), or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
- acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
- the strength of the background in physical chemistry,
- the motivation for experimental work,
- the interest for environmental topics,
- the extent of problem-solving skills and abilities to analyse and work with complex issues,
- the self-motivation, and the ability to work detail- and goal-oriented and
- ability both to work independently and to collaborate with others.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ‘ time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
