Postdoc Researcher to the ERC project “Explaining Transnational Jihad“ (re-announcement)

DIIS invites applications for a temporary and project specific 2-year position as postdoc researcher starting on 1 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The researcher will be part of the larger research project “Explaining Transnational Jihad – Patterns of Escalation and Containment” funded by the European Research Council.

The Project

The overall project that the postdoc researcher will be part of aims at advancing an understanding of how jihadist conflicts become transnational and under what circumstances they can be contained. The project also aims at developing an interdisciplinary analytical framework, which combines micro- and macro level approaches to jihadism, drawing from both Religious Studies, Security Studies and Peace & Conflict Studies. With its focus on macro-level conflict structures,  the ambition is to develop a new framework for thinking about containment, providing an alternative to both the micro-level countering discourses embraced by much of the radicalization research, and the containment thinking that stems from the treatment of jihadist conflicts as civil wars in the peace and conflict literature.

The overall project has four main components 1) a quantitative examination of transnationalization processes drawing from among others the Religion and Armed Conflicts (RELAC) dataset/UCDP hosted by  Uppsala University, 2) comparative case studies of the mechanisms of escalation and de-escalation of jihadist conflicts in Syria/Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Mali/Niger, Pakistan/Afghanistan focusing particularly on the movements of Islamic State, Al-Qaeda, the Taleban, and Boko Haram, 3) securitization analyses of the macro-level conflict structures that transnational jihadist movements tap into, and finally 4) sociotheological worldview analyses of potential changes in jihadist conflict imagery during transnationalization processes.

The applicant is particularly expected to contribute to component 2 and 4 with an emphasis on investigating the escalation and containment dynamics that relate to theological interpretations and religious worldviews. The applicant must have obtained a PhD degree in a relevant field – applicants with a background in theology, religious studies and/or Middle Eastern Studies as well as linguistic skills in Arabic will be preferred. Proficiency in written and oral English is required.

General Information

The position is aimed at applicants who have obtained their PhD within the past three years. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances (such as sick leave, parental leave or similar). Furthermore, the applicant must have demonstrated an ability to publish and communicate research in accordance with the Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

The postdoc will be based at DIIS’ address in Nordhavn.

Terms of employment 

The expected start date for the postdoc researcher is 1 October 2019. The employment is limited to two years and expires automatically at the end of this two-year period.

Remuneration and other job conditions follow the general agreement between AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) and the Danish Ministry of Finance as well as local collective agreements at DIIS.

Depending on seniority, the starting yearly basis salary ranges between 375,724 DKK and 398,578 DKK, including pension contributions. Furthermore, a yearly research supplement of 53,486 DKK will be added. Depending on your personal qualifications, a qualification supplement may also be negotiated.

Candidates from abroad may under certain conditions be eligible for a special researcher tax scheme, when working as a postdoc researcher in Denmark.

  • A detailed Curriculum Vitae, including a complete list of publications
  • Documentation of academic qualifications, including Master’s and PhD diplomas
  • Up to five central scholarly works must be enclosed – either uploaded electronically or sent by mail in three copies each (see more about this below).
  • A statement of max. 1000 words describing your research idea, methodology and how it will contribute to the overall ambition of the ERC project.

If you will be sending scholarly works by letter/parcel, please note that your electronic application must also include a list of the up to five works sent to DIIS in physical form. It is possible to upload some works electronically, while others (e.g. books) can be sent in physical form (three copies each). Any material sent to DIIS in physical form must be marked “ERC postdoc” and addressed to HR, Danish Institute for International Studies, Østbanegade 117, 2100 Copenhagen, Denmark. The letter/parcel must reach DIIS no later than 12 August 2019 at 12.00 noon (CET). Qualified applicants will be assessed by an assessment committee before selected for interviews. The applicants sent for assessment will be notified about the composition of the assessment committee beforehand. The committee will only assess applicants who meet the requirements listed above. When DIIS receives the assessment results, we invite selected candidates for an interview as soon as possible thereafter.
