Postdoctoral Researcher, Development Studies
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä is seeking to recruit a
Postdoctoral Researcher in Development Studies for a fixed-term period of 1.1.2023-31.8.2025.
Duties and requirements
The position is allocated to the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy and to a project funded by the Academy of Finland: “Re-articulating citizenship in times of uncertainty: Hybridity in Covid-19 responses in sub-Saharan Africa”. The main task of the Postdoctoral Researcher, as a member of an international research team consisting of two Postdoctoral Researchers located in the University of Jyväskylä and collaborators in Tanzania, Uganda, Denmark and in the UK, is to conduct research on the public state discourses in Tanzania. The researcher is expected to focus on the institutional orders the state used as sources of legitimacy for tutelage, neglect, and coercion of citizens in response to Covid-19. The Postdoctoral Researcher will conduct qualitative analysis of public discourses such as speeches, policy documents, and media material in Kiswahili and English. The position does not include fieldwork in Tanzania but focuses instead on the analytical and writing components. The Postdoctoral Researcher will have an opportunity for a mobility visit to a research group www.everydayhumanitarianismintanzania.org led by Professor Lisa Ann Richey in the Department of Management, Society, and Communication in the Copenhagen Business School, Denmark.
The applicants are expected to have a PhD degree in the field of development studies, African studies, anthropology, political sciences, communication, or other relevant academic backgrounds. Good command of English is required for this position. Prior expertise on Tanzania, working knowledge of Kiswahili, and familiarity with methods to analyse public discourses will be considered as an asset.
We expect from a Postdoctoral Researcher preparedness to work as a full member of an international research team, to contribute to co-authored publications, to take part in the internal research seminars of the project, and in the planning and organizing of academic meetings. The primary place to conduct the research is Jyväskylä, Finland. The duties and qualification requirements for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations, Rector’s decision on personnel matters and language skills guidelines. The Postdoctoral Researcher positions are rated on levels 5-6 in the YPJ salary system for Finnish universities. The monthly salary (gross income) in this Postdoctoral Researcher position will be approximately 3.200–4.100€, depending on the qualifications and prior experience of the candidate.
Six months trial period is applied to the filling of the position.
