Postdoc in electrokinetic remediation

Electrokinetic remediation is a technology with a great potential to remove contaminants from complex subsurface matrices. The application of a low-intensity electric field in the subsurface can mobilize contaminants and deliver reactants in impervious porous media. A rigorous understanding of physical, electrostatic and chemical processes in porous media is of pivotal importance to apply electrokinetics to the remediation of heterogeneous porous media and to establish this approach as an effective and viable green remediation technology.

Responsibilities and qualifications
In this project you will have the possibility of performing relevant research in an interesting and fast developing field and you will work on the recently funded DFF project “EK-Rem: The electrokinetic way to green remediation technologies”.

Your main tasks will be to:

  • Investigate the complex physical, electrostatic and chemical processes controlling electrokinetic transport in porous media.
  • Develop innovative experimental setups to study electrokinetic transport in different matrices.
  • Characterize physical and chemical properties of subsurface porous media.
  • Investigate the impact of porous media heterogeneity (particularly sandy-clayey systems).
  • Assess the role of solution composition and porous media properties on electrokinetic transport and delivery of different tracers and reactants.
  • Supervise student activities (e.g., BSc and MSc theses) related to this project.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

The candidate shall have a solid background in environmental chemistry and engineering with documented capability of investigating physical and chemical processes in porous media. The candidate should also have previous experience in electrokinetics and in the experimental characterization and investigation of subsurface processes. Expertise in constructing and conducting transport experiments in multidimensional laboratory setups, spectroscopy and chromatography techniques, and/or image analysis is an advantage.

Soft skills requirements include fluency in spoken and written English, capability of performing independent work, as well as curiosity and strong research interest.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 18 months with starting date 01.09.2022.
