Postdoc in Ultrahigh-Repetition-Rate Terahertz Air Photonics

At the Ultrafast Infrared and Terahertz Science Group, DTU Electro, you will break new ground at the absolute forefront of what is possible within generation, manipulation, and control of light waves on the femtosecond timescale.

We are looking for a strong postdoc candidate within the field of terahertz (THz) air photonics. The successful candidate will work on a project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark in close collaboration with international partners.

The aim of this project is to enable the air-plasma based THz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) with an unprecedented MHz repetition-rate. We have strong expertise within ultra-broadband THz pulse generation and detection based on air photonics in the standard kHz repetition rate regime. To push for the MHz operation while maintaining practical laser power requirements, many scientific and technical challenges exist. Within the project, you and the team will investigate a novel micro-air-plasma process for efficient broadband THz generation, with strong theoretical support from the project partners. During the project, a new THz electrical field detection scheme will also be studied and refined, to further facilitate the realization of ultra-broadband THz time domain spectroscopy with high repetition-rate. Capacity of such a unique THz spectroscopy platform will be applied for non-contact electrical property characterization of low-dimensional materials. 

If you are selected for the position, you will be responsible for the progress of the project, and thereby develop your leadership capabilities. The position requires a collaborative and international mindset, natural curiosity, and strong problem-solving skills to push forward a challenging project. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be responsible for

  • Development of an experimental setup for high power femtosecond laser pulse compression and its second harmonic generation.
  • Investigation and optimization of novel THz detector.
  • The development of an experimental setup for micro-air-plasma THz generation and demonstration of air-based THz-TDS system with MHz repetition-rate.
  • Disseminate and communicate the results through journal and conference publications.
  • Coordinate with project partners, assist in student supervision and funding applications.

It is an advantage if you have some of the following specific qualifications:

  • Ultrafast laser science
  • THz-time domain spectroscopy
  • Fs laser induced filamentation
  • Low-dimensional materials

It is also an advantage if you possess some or all of the following general qualifications:

  • You have a strong capacity for problem solving
  • You enjoy an international environment
  • You can complete tasks on time
  • You are well formulated in English, and can write scientific reports and manuscripts for publication at a high level
  • You have a desire to develop both professionally and personally

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2.5 years.
