Two postdoctoral positions in the Quantum Optomechanics Group at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

The Project

Both projects pertain to mechanical resonators operating in the quantum regime. Our group has pioneered a new approach to engineer mechanical systems of unprecedented coherence, which we explore for a host of applications in quantum science and technology.

In the first project, mechanical membrane resonators are integrated with superconducting microwave circuits. The resulting electro-mechanical systems, when operated at very low temperatures, allow us to study fundamental physics, such as exotic sources of quantum decoherence, as well as novel protocols for amplification, storage, and conversion of quantum states, which are of great interest to applications in quantum information processing and networks. This project will strongly rely on microwave measurement techniques and dilution refrigeration, and will also include interactions with theorists in the section.

In the second project, we will develop new types of extremely coherent mechanical resonators used for quantum sensing experiments, e.g. to detect signatures from spins or molecules applied to the resonators. The goal is to achieve unprecedented sensitivity, even at room temperature, by engineering geometry and materials, as well as the applied measurement protocols. Numerical simulation, cleanroom fabrication techniques, and optical interferometry are key techniques for this project.

The projects are sponsored by the European Research Council (ERC) and the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF).

The Scientific Environment

The Quantum Optomechanics group brings together an international and interdisciplinary team to work on an extremely dynamic research frontier. We have cutting-edge infrastructure at our disposal, which includes low-noise microwave and optical measurement systems operating at the quantum limit, vacuum and cryogenic experimental platforms including a dry dilution refrigerator,  and access to world-class nanofabrication facilities.

The research is embedded in a wide collaboration network, both national and international, which also provides access to first-class theoretical support. Our work also contributes to the Center of Excellence “Hybrid Quantum Networks Hy-Q,” whose mission is to merge disparate quantum system into large-scale quantum networks. The larger quantum community at the Niels Bohr Institute provides for a stimulating environment with ample opportunity for interactions, and exposure to international frontier research through e.g. seminars and lectures.
