The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for the position of
for a fixed term position starting in 1 September 2020, or as agreed. The doctoral student will be employed for a fixed term of one year, with a possibility of extension for up to three consecutive years. Successful candidates are expected to work full time on the PhD thesis and to complete their thesis in four years.
The position is located at the Department of Forest Sciences in the research group Forest Bioeconomy, Business, and Sustainability (FBBS). The position is funded by the Metsämiesten säätiö foundation and relates to the project Forest sector foresight in changing markets (Metsäalan ennakointi muuttuvilla markkinoilla). The project is a collaboration between the FBBS group of the University of Helsinki and the Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics.
The doctoral thesis project assesses the means and developmental needs for forest sector foresight in the changing forest-based industries, and particularly in the context of small and medium sized companies. The studied topics include the strategic management approaches of firms, companies’ influence on forest-based sector development, and the potential contribution of the forest-based bioeconomy to global sustainability goals.
The duties of a doctoral student are to work on his/her own doctoral thesis, and to complete his/her postgraduate studies. The duties may also include teaching and other tasks, like research assistance in projects within the research area. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in a field that is relevant to the research topic, such as forest economics, environmental economics, business and management, or futures studies. Other requirements include ability and motivation to do research in the studied field and to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree. Successful candidates are expected to have excellent collaboration as well as independent analytical and problem solving skills. Fluency in English language is required, and priority will be given to candidates with at least satisfactory command of Finnish, due to close interaction with stakeholders. Experience in academic publishing is seen as a merit. The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki.
The appointee should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right in September 2020.
