The Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKE) is one of the university’s largest departments, with operations mainly in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Our aim is to engage in medical and biomedical education and research of high international standing. At undergraduate level the department is responsible for most of the medical programme, the speech and language pathology programme and the medical biology programme.

PhD student in Medical science, formally based at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKE)

As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited devoted to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

As a PhD student you will participate in the project: “Propagation of neurodegenerative diseases – underlying mechanisms and diagnostic tools”

The candidate will work with projects on the mechanisms that cause the accumulation and spread of neurodegenerative proteins. The project will focus both on understanding the cellular mechanisms and target these for diagnostics and treatment.

Part of the project will be conducted in our collaborators laboratory in Canada and the PhD education of the PhD student will involve approximately 6 months spent abroad.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

Description of qualifications

Prospective candidates should be very motivated. Background knowledge and understanding of biological mechanisms and neurobiology are required. In the projects, the candidate will use methods such as cell culture, genetic modifications (siRNA and CRISPR), protein aggregation, labeling of cells, microscopy, cell sorting, exosome isolation, Western blot, ELISA and other methods. Practical experience of laboratory work including these methods is a merit. Experience in working with neurodegenerative diseases is a merit. Strong communication skills in English are required as well as the ability to work both independently and in collaborative projects as a team member.

Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period not exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years´ full time research training.

Starting date 
By agreement.

The salary for PhD students is based on the department’s salary scale.
