Project researcher / Doctoral candidate positions on Programmable Systems for Intelligence in Automobiles Project

Project researcher / Doctoral candidate positions on Programmable Systems for Intelligence in Automobiles (ECSEL/ PRYSTINE Project)

Communication systems lab at Department of Future Technologies, University of Turku is looking for project researchers / PhD candidates on security and safety of autonomous road vehicles. The positions are fixed term employment that starts as soon as possible and ends 30.4.2021.

The positions are part of the ECSEL funded Programmable Systems for Intelligence in Automobiles (PRYSTINE) project. It involves 60 prominent industry players, universities, and research institutes all over Europe. The overall aim of the project is developing fail-operational urban surround perception (FUSION) to enable safe automated driving in urban and rural environments. There are two positions available that require different skills and expertise: security and safety engineering, and embedded systems integration for intelligent controller for autonomous vehicles.

Key tasks
Our contribution to the project include requirements specification, system-level design, system integration, and validation through live testing of a vehicle equipped with the fail-operational autonomous controller developed in the project. The project researchers will, depending on their expertise and profile,

-Participate in requirement specification of the intelligent controller and communication infrastructure
-Do system level design, analysis, integration, and validation for the controller
-Develop security solutions for autonomous systems, encompassing communication links, components, and data protection
-Participate in live testing of the developed controller in a heavy-duty vehicle demonstrator built for the project
-Publish the results of their work in international scientific publications

Successful candidates for either position must possess an applicable Master of Science degree, completed with very good grades. Candidates who have completed all their coursework for the Master of Science degree can also be considered, if they have experience relevant to the project.

We expect the candidate for security and safety engineering for autonomous vehicles to have

-Cyber security educational background or equivalent experience
-Ability to specify, analyze, and develop security solutions

We expect the candidate for embedded systems integration for intelligent controller to have
-Experience in C programming
-Embedded systems and/or computer engineering educational background, or equivalent experience
-HW/SW co-integration experience

In addition, for both positions we appreciate
-Ability to write scientific publications Excellent oral and written English skills Familiarity with data analysis methods
-Familiarity with cryptographic algorithm implementations
-Good general programming skills
-Software development experience High motivation and work efficiency
-Good understanding of network technologies and simulation tools

The salary will be based on levels 2-4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research staff in the salary system applied at Finnish universities, according to which the base salary for the position is 2033,29 – 2535,20 € per month. In addition, a performance-based salary component of min 6% and max 50 % will be paid.

The position is subject to a six-month trial period.
