Postdoc in Beyond 5G concepts for ultra-low latency and extreme reliability

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in Beyond 5G concepts for ultra-low latency and extreme reliability is open for appointment from October 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 24 months.The Department of Electronic Systems is one of the largest departments at Aalborg University with a total of more than 230 employees. The department is internationally recognized in particular for its contributions within Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The research and teaching of the Department of Electronic Systems focus on electronic engineering and the activity areas are organized in the sections: Antennas, Propagation and Millimetre-wave Systems section (APMS), Automation Control section (Control), Connectivity section (CNT), Signal and Information Processing section (SIP), Wireless Communication Networks section (WCN) and Communication, Media and Information technologies (CMI).<p>The department focuses on maintaining a close interplay with the university’s surroundings – locally, nationally and internationally – as well as producing unique basic research and educating talented and creative engineers. Job description

We seek to appoint a PostDoc to take part in research and knowledge exchange in the research project with close collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs. 

With 5G NR currently being crystallized in the recent 3GPP specifications, research on further evolution of this radio technology has already started.

Beyond 5G networks will further enhance the current 5G NR capabilities towards the support of higher data rates, lower latencies and higher reliabilities. For example, beyond 5G radios may need to support fast closed loop control with cycle times down to 0.1 ms and wired-like reliability. Typical use cases are drive control in manufacturing, or intra-vehicle communication for engine and suspension control. 

This postdoc project focuses on the design of physical layer and medium access control enablers for the support of ultra-low latency and extreme reliability. In particular, frame structure, link adaptation, channel access and interference mitigation mechanisms have to be redesigned according to the new beyond 5G challenging objectives. Moreover, the usage of machine learning tools for interference mitigation is to be investigated.

Bands of interest for the design include both cm-wave (6 GHz and below) and mm-wave (28 GHz, 52.6 GHz, 60 GHz).

Active dissemination of the research findings via international conference and high-quality journal is expected. Further, the research is also intended to impact the next 3GPP NR Releases. 

The ideal candidate for the position is expected to be capable of conducting research in the above areas, and should combine strong analytical skills with a broad knowledge of wireless communications and related design challenges. Also, experience with Matlab and C++ is highly appreciated.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance’s current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.
