Information about the division
The division of Subatomic and Plasma Physics carries out research in many different areas: magnetic fusion and laser-produced plasmas, electrophysics, theoretical subatomic physics, experimental subatomic physics, nuclear safeguards, diagnostics in nuclear reactors, and nuclear reactor modelling. The nuclear reactor modelling activities are carried out by the DREAM task force (Deterministic REactor Modelling). DREAM is a cross-disciplinary group having expertise in neutron transport, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and numerical methods. The aim of the group is to develop beyond state-of-the-art techniques for modelling nuclear reactors, thus contributing to improved simulations tools and enhanced safety.
A PhD position in reactor physics is offered within the DREAM task force. The PhD project aims at applying Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) techniques to study the stability of nuclear reactor cores under load-follow conditions, with a special emphasis on xenon oscillations.
As a PhD student, you will be in charge of developing, implementing and testing a ROM for the purpose of the project under the supervision of a senior researcher. Once the ROM is developed and verified, you will have to use the model onto different reactor conditions, in order to identify reactor configurations leading to unstable behaviour. The physical mechanisms leading to unstable behavior will then need to be understood. Although a large part of the work is computationally-oriented, a profound knowledge of reactor physics and system behavior is necessary in order to gain physical insight into such mechanisms.
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
A master in nuclear engineering or an equivalent master with education in reactor physics and neutron transport is required. Proficiency in programming is necessary. Applications not containing a documented knowledge in reactor physics, neutron transport and programming will be systematically disregarded. Some knowledge in nuclear reactor modelling is advantageous. Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment is also desirable. The applicants need to have a perfect mastery of English (both in writing and in speaking).
