PhD scholarship in Promoting a Lower Intake of Sweets and Treats and a Healthier Snacking Pattern in Families with Young School-age Children

DTU Food seeks a dedicated candidate for a 3-years PhD position in the field of nutrition and health promotion. You will be part of the Nutrition and health promotion group at the Division of Risk Assessment and Nutrition. The research focus of the group is on diet, nutrition and health promotion, including designing and conducting The Danish National Survey of Diet and Physical Activity and the implementation and evaluation of real-life interventions focusing on increasing healthy eating and sustainable food production.


The PhD study is part of a larger interdisciplinary project in collaboration with several partners. The focus of the study is to map and promote a healthier eating pattern among young school-age children by substituting sugar-rich foods (as candy, chocolate and cakes) and drinks with healthier foods or other joyful activities. The PhD candidate will be part of an intervention study in collaboration with the school health services and the child dental care in a municipality in Denmark.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD student will take part in preparing the intervention, including preparation of assessment tools, and in the collection of data at both baseline and endpoint visits in 2019 and 2020, including socio-demographics, anthropometrics, physical activity routines, sleeping pattern, dietary habits with focus on sweet patterns and everyday life structures. 


You will be engaged in all parts of the intervention with a special focus on processing dietary data, testing mediating variables and assessing behaviour change as well as the families’ use of self-regulation strategies to lower their intake of sugar-rich foods and drinks.


Your task will be to handle all aspects of your PhD project and training. This means to:

  • Plan, conduct and report  results from the intervention study
  • Dissemination of results among colleagues, and in conference and journal publications

We expect that you master the balance between, on one hand, working independently and take initiatives, and on the other hand, seeking advice from your supervisor, your fellow students and colleagues.


Candidates should have a master’s degree in Human Nutrition or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level.


Practical and theoretical experience with nutritional intervention research and experience with assessment methods used for dietary recording and mediating variables, e.g. changes in self-efficacy, in a setting-based nutrition intervention program is an advantage. Interest in and experience with interdisciplinary collaboration projects is preferred. The awareness of how to engage with others and a certain degree of adaptability are important skills to make the collaboration efficient.


Excellent skills in both Danish and English are required, oral as well as writing.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
