PhD scholarship in Distributed Operation and Control of Multi Energy Systems with Power to Gas (P2G) – DTU-NTU Double Degree

Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE), Department of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in “Distributed Operation and Control of Multi Energy Systems with Power to Gas (P2G)”.

The project is a joint PhD degree project in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The PhD student is required to stay at NTU for one year to fulfill the requirements of the joint PhD degree.

With increasing penetration of RESs in the power system, the uncertainties and fluctuations of RESs bring significant challenges to the operation and control of the power system. The power system has to be continuously balanced in order to maintain security of the whole system. It is a big challenge to maintain the continuous balance with frequent and large fluctuations from RESs.

Hydrogen could play a key role to facilitate the transition to the future deep low-carbon or no-carbon energy systems. Hydrogen from renewables can be achieved by an electrolyser which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. The electrolyser can help realize very high penetration of renewables in power systems or renewable-based power systems. The electricity consumption of electrolysers can be adjusted to follow the variable electricity production from renewables. They offer a flexible load to provide grid balancing services and the hydrogen produced is a source of storage to support the efficient and secure operation of the whole energy systems with high penetration of renewables.

Responsibilities and tasks
This project is to analyze the technical and economic feasibility of renewable-based hydrogen in the future renewable-based energy systems. It will develop a technical and economic model of the power to gas (P2G) system, i.e., the electrolyser. The use of hydrogen will be analyzed in the future energy systems. Optimal energy scheduling schemes and real-time control will be developed to minimize the cost and maintain secure operation of the renewable based energy system with P2G.

Main tasks:

  • Technical and Economic Model of the P2G system
  • Coordination through hydrogen in the future energy system
  • Distributed optimal energy planning of multi-energy systems with P2G
  • Distributed real-time control of multi-energy systems with P2G
Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree in engineering.

The candidate with the following knowledge will be preferred:
  • Fundamental knowledge about the power system operation, control and analysis
  • Good at optimization theory, familiar with one of the optimization software, such as GAMS and Matlab
  • Knowledge/experience about integrated energy systems modeling and operation, i.e., the electricity, heat and gas systems
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
