The Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, invites applications for a three-year postdoc position offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new research project on optically based three-dimensional dosimetry in radiotherapy. The successful candidate will use her/his strong background in optical physics to contribute to the development of new optical setups for 3D readout of dose distributions and characterization of new materials developed as part of the project.
The position is available from 1 August 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter.
The postdoc position is related to a new collaborative project between researchers at the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy and Dept. of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The project concerns research into new methods for the experimental verification of 3D distributions of medical radiation doses, for instance in relation to the recently commissioned Danish Center for Particle Therapy (DCPT) at Aarhus University Hospital.
In addition to the current postdoc position, the project will employ five new PhD-students. The postdoc will be involved in co-supervision of the PhD students and expectedly also masters and bachelor students joining the project group.
The dose measurements are based on spatial mapping of so-called optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) from certain transparent materials. The postdoc will be responsible for designing and constructing the 3D optical readout system for OSL (lasers, optics, camera, electronics, motion control, index matching, data acquisition), and for making a vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) light source by harmonic generation. Furthermore, the postdoc will have a coordinating role in the project and contribute to dissemination.
The five PhD students will each be responsible for various subprojects with emphasis on optical/material physics (two positions) and clinical applications (three positions).
Applicants should hold a PhD in physics or a related field. She/he must have experience with designing and using advanced optical setups and lasers. The right candidate has good communication skills and enjoys interaction with younger students and other project-group members. A good knowledge of English is a requirement. In addition, she/he has good management skills and an interest in contributing to project coordination. Knowledge of PC-based data-acquisition and control is an advantage (e.g. Labview), as is also knowledge of ultrashort-pulse lasers. Previous demonstration of project coordination, student (co-) supervision and/or outreach activities is also advantageous, but not a requirement.

Shortlisting is used.
