The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 240 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor’s, Master’s and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.
Information about the projectData driven research using machine learning is becoming increasingly important for the research activities at Chalmers. To extract valuable patterns from big data sources and to meet the related challenges, Chalmers has started a group using applied machine learning in research projects involving large data sets and AI. We are now recruiting another research engineer to the group. As a Data Science Research Engineer you will be contributing to the unit of Data Science Research Engineers in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and you will be working in direct contact with one or more research projects within Chalmers. As a group we also work together with the new CHAIR initiative at Chalmers (http://www.chalmers.se/chair).
The unit of Data Science Research Engineers is being implemented as a joint project among the Chalmers Areas of Advance: The Areas of Advance are platforms that offer common access to cutting edge research infrastructures and interdisciplinary research challenges, often directly relevant for industry and society. We are working with big data from various sources, coming from both the natural sciences as well as digital platforms across society.
The Data Science Research Engineers are, based on their specific profiles, working in close collaboration to one or more research groups developing tools and analysis methods for data driven research activities. The aim is to develop and implement new research data analysis in existing platforms or in some cases develop a data analysis infrastructure from the ground up. You will get to work with a broad spectrum of different types of data, and be an essential part of the process of finding new scientific insights. Part of the time will be set aside to learn new methods and establish general competencies in Data Science and machine learning for yourself, and also shared within the group and more broadly throughout Chalmers.
The competencies sought are specifically machine learning and statistics applied to large and complex data sets, but you are also expected to learn and apply tools and methods from a range of other data science related areas, e.g., data mining, information visualization, and data management. This is done together with a team of research engineers with similar roles. We collaborate internally as well as with research groups to discuss, implement, evaluate, and communicate our results.
You will be located together with the rest of the group at the Computer Science and Engineering Department.
The position is a full-time permanent employment.Qualifications
A minimum of Master-level education in computer science, mathematics or mathematical statistics is expected, but other educational backgrounds may be suitable depending on the specific skills and experience of the applicant. Documented experience in previously applying some of the skills outlined above, as well as software development in general is expected and proficiency in programming and scripting languages needs to demonstrated. Good communication and collaborative skills are essential. You need to be an easy-going person who is not only passionate about developing your skills in machine learning and AI, but also open and curious to learn about new domains where these tools and methods get applied.
We are also considering candidates holding a PhD degree in related fields of quantitative research. Some project oriented leadership experience is meriting.
Candidates with a strong domain specific background with capability and a motivation to develop a data science career in an academic environment are welcome.
