At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more positions as postdoc in Cyber Security are open for appointment from May 1, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are available for 36 months. The Department of Electronic Systems is one of the largest departments at Aalborg University with a total of more than 230 employees. The department is internationally recognized in particular for its contributions within Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The research and teaching of the Department of Electronic Systems focus on electronic engineering and the activity areas are organized in the sections: Antennas, Propagation and Millimetre-wave Systems section (APMS), Automation Control section (Control), Connectivity section (CNT), Signal and Information Processing section (SIP), Wireless Communication Networks section (WCN) and Communication, Media and Information technologies (CMI). The department focuses on maintaining a close interplay with the university’s surroundings – locally, nationally and internationally – as well as producing unique basic research and educating talented and creative engineers. The department collaborates with leading ICT researchers all over the world.
We seek to appoint one ore more PostDocs to take part in research and knowledge exchange in the research project SecDNS.
The SecDNS project is a research project carried out in collaboration between Technical University of Denmark, CSIS Security Group A/S, and Aalborg University. The project aims at investigating DNS-traffic in real-time in order to block requests to malicious domains. While this has traditionally been done using blacklists, this project will use machine learning and take into a count the insight from a large variety of data sources, including but not limited to domain names, IP addresses, registration data, times of registration, geolocation, traffic patterns for domains, and the use of certificates.The project combines the research knowledge of the universities with access to substantial amounts of data from the industrial partner CSIS as well as other collaboration partners. The project offers an opportunity to conduct research at a high international level while at the same time seeing the results materialise in concrete solutions implemented by a leading company in the field.
The main task(s) of the current positions is within the scope of the project, more specifically focusing on traffic analysis and machine learning. The work focuses on exploring various sub-classes of problems and deriving machine learning models and features for detection of e.g. phishing domains, abusive registrants and malware distribution.
In addition to the work on the project, the candidates should expect some teaching and dissemination in particular at M.Sc. and Master levels.
Ideally, the candidates have a relevant PhD degree in computer science, computer engineering or electrical engineering. In particular, knowledge of the following areas are desired: Cyber security, Computer networks, Network traffic analysis, DNS traffic, knowledge of IDS/IPS systems, machine learning and feature engineering. Knowledge of graph theory and theoretical machine learning will also be beneficial

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
