The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of
Denmark (DTU) has an open 3-year PhD position in the area of high-pressure combustion chemistry in internal combustion engines.
The PhD project will be conducted at the CHEC Research Centre at DTU Chemical Engineering. CHEC is internationally recognised with respect to research in combustion, emission control, gasification, modelling, advanced measurements in boilers and catalysis.
The research project involves development and validation of reaction mechanisms for dual-fuel oxidation, e.g., n-heptane/methane and n-heptane/LPG. The specific aim is to construct a skeletal multicomponent mechanism for use in CFD dual-fuel combustion simulations. For validation of the detailed reaction mechanism, high-pressure flow reactor experiments will be conducted.
The PhD position is a part of a larger project funded by the Independent
Research Fund Denmark and includes in addition a postdoctoral position at DTU Chemical Engineering and another PhD and postdoctoral fellowship at the DTU Mechanical Engineering. Key project partners are, in addition to DTU Mechanical Engineering, MAN Energy Solutions, Copenhagen Denmark and The University of Lund, Sweden.
Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate will conduct high-pressure flow reactor experiments to characterize oxidation of selected fuels and fuel mixtures. He or she will develop and validate detailed reaction mechanisms and reduce them analytically. The candidate is also expected to work closely with DTU Mechanical Engineering to define the criteria in developing skeletal mechanisms for different fuels and evaluate their performance in CFD calculations. The position will involve co-supervision of MSc students.
Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
During your studies, you have demonstrated that you can master both experimental and modelling work.
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
