The Division of Energy Science at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) has an open Ph.D. position in the subject of Energy Engineering. In your research, you will develop combustion and gasification processes for effective and sustainable conversion of biomass and waste fuels. You will both work with researchers from different fields (energy- and chemical engineering), universities/institutes (national and international) and with equipment manufacturers.

Energy engineering includes the development of technologies and processes for sustainable energy supply. The research focuses on bioenergy technologies and energy efficient use in industry and society.DutiesAs a Ph.D. student, you will work for a doctoral degree as the final goal, according to the goals specified in the Higher Education Ordinance. In parallel with your thesis work, you will also undertake courses during your research education.
Your Ph.D. project is a part of an ongoing project funded by the Swedish Energy Agency/Swedish Research Council. The purpose of your research is to improve the operational and economic performances of fluidized bed biomass combustors and gasifiers to be used for heat, power, and transportation biofuel production. The overall aim is to design bed particle layers that 1) reduce the risk for bed agglomeration, bed material deposition and fouling in fluidized bed combustion/gasification (FBC/FBG) of biomass fuels, and 2) provide a positive catalytic influence on internal tar reforming and thus increasing the quality of the raw syngas in the FBG process.
You will do gasification/combustion experiments in lab-, pilot- and full-scale plants and characterize the produced bed particle layers with different chemical- and physical analytical methods. You will also formulate models that can predict the bed particle layer characteristics for different biomass fuel and bed material combinations. In your research, you will collaborate with researchers from Luleå University of Technology, Umeå University and Technical University in Wien/Bioenergy 2020+.
A doctoral student’s main responsibility is to pursue doctoral studies with the aim to successfully defend a doctoral dissertation. The position includes a fulltime fixed-term employment for 4 years (maximum 5 years). The position may include departmental duties (such as teaching) with up to 20% of fulltime.
QualificationsIn order to be eligible for the position you must have a degree of Master of Science in chemical engineering, material science, applied physics, or similar specializations and a strong interest in thermochemical processes. You should be a good team player and have the ability to take initiative. You should also have good knowledge of the English language and good oral and written proficiency. Experiences in high-temperature chemistry and thermochemical conversion are considered as advantages.
