A 3-year PhD fellowship is available at DynaMo Center (www.dynamo.ku.dk), a Center of Excellence within plant biology financed by the Danish National Research Foundation. The Center is located at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The PhD position commences 1 May 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Unicellular microalgae have emerged as novel microbial hosts with the potential of revolutionizing the production of monoclonal antibodies and other therapeutic proteins. However, commercial utilization is hampered by difficulties in achieving economically feasible cell-densities in production systems. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is used to pioneer research into developing microalgae for high-value protein production. In this project we are curious to learn why this model microalgae is unable to utilize external sources of sugar for growth.
This project will combine microalgae molecular biology, biochemistry, fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry.
