Doc­toral Stu­dent, learn­ing research (The Centre for Uni­versity Teach­ing and Learn­ing HYPE)

The Centre for University Teaching and Learning (HYPE) carries out and supports research in the field of university pedagogy. The Centre’s multidisciplinary research focuses on learning, teaching, learning environments, and practices in higher education. Therefore, the Centre cooperates closely with pedagogical experts from universities nationally and internationally. The Centre fosters research on learning and teaching in higher education and supports field-specific development efforts on all campuses.

The Centre for University Teaching and Learning and particularly the CELLS project requires:


for a fixed term period 1.4.2019-31.12.2021.

The PhD student will conduct research aimed at completing a dissertation within Cultivating Expertise in the Learning of Life Sciences – Advancing Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (CELLS) project. There could also be some teaching as well as other duties within the project.

The aim of the CELLS project is to investigate the development of expertise in the life sciences (particularly in biology and pharmacy) utilising various methods, such as eye-tracking and virtual reality environments. The results of the project support the advancement of university learning and teaching, particularly in life sciences.

The successful candidate needs to have the capacity to conduct independent research as a member of a research team, have excellent collaboration skills, have an interest in learning of life sciences, as well as multimethod research and an appropriate degree for conducting research into learning (a master’s degree or equivalent in education, educational psychology or subject teaching in the life sciences). Skills seen as advantageous for the position include: Studies in natural sciences and experience about utilizing eye-tracking methodology. One needs to have good oral and writing skills in English.

The appointee must hold the right to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Helsinki. If the appointee does not hold this right, he or she must obtain it within the trial period of six months. In such a case, the employment contract may initially be concluded under the title of research assistant for the duration of the trial period.

The salary will be based on the Finnish universities’ salary system, being €2 300 – €2 500 per month depending on the experience of the successful candidate. A six-month trial period will be applied.
