The appointee will be also closely associated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-sustainability-science) which is a new cross-faculty research unit in sustainability science within the University of Helsinki.

2 YEAR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION IN SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE (Sustainable urban systems)
The appointee is expected to participate in developing the research group of Sustainable Urban Systems in cooperation with assistant professor Sanna Ala-Mantila. The vision of the research group is to focus on social and ecological sustainability of urban systems, and support cities in understanding what is needed for them to flourish, not only in terms of productivity and innovations, but also in terms of reduced environmental pressures and increased quality of life. For this purpose, the urban areas must be understood as part of local and global processes, not to be looked on isolation. Especially relevant way forward is to combine multiple sustainability aspects, and aim to understand their interlinkages and co-dependencies in the urban context. Method-wise, the main focus of the group is on using a wide range of data sources through rigorous data analysis methods to tackle the urban challenges. This includes getting the most from existing statistics and spatial data, and also identifying and creating novel data sources and collaborations.
The position of the post-doctoral researcher is linked with the initiative to strengthen the sustainability research profile of the University of Helsinki and requires the appointee’s participation in the University-wide cooperation on sustainability inter alia participating in HELSUS activities. Also, the appointee’s duties will, in addition to conducting their independent research, also include providing occasional teaching in sustainability of urban systems, participating in writing grant applications, as well as participating in other activities and collaborating at the Faculty and the HELSUS.
The appointee shall have completed an applicable doctoral degree before the start of employment. The position requires the ability and motivation to conduct independent scientific research, and good oral and written proficiency in English. The candidate must also have demonstrated experience in publishing papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
Applications are expected primarily from researchers interested in multidisciplinary research with a doctoral degree in fields such as urban studies, economics, human geography, engineering or social sciences. Also, applicants from backgrounds, such as statistics, computer sciences, geoinformatics or similar are warmly welcomed, if their thematic research interests are aligned with those of the research group.
The starting date is flexible but preferably no later than May 2019.The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system applied in Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary range will be €3,100–3,600 per month, depending on the merits and experience of the appointee. There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
