At the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering our students are studying to be for example innovators, entrepreneurs, illustrators, communications officers, network technicians and engineers. Here we have the research specialisations of Embedded Systems, and Innovation and Product Realisation. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.
The research environment Embedded Systems (ES) at MDH announces a PhD-student position in Computer Science. ES is the nationally leading center in embedded-systems research and internationally known for the ability to combine the highest academic standard with industrially relevant research. ES provides a stimulating international research environment, characterized by its cooperative atmosphere, openness, and team spirit – a great environment for a researcher to grow in; with a mix of established and young researchers. A vast amount of activity is currently seen around Internet-of-Things (IoT), which are seen in many applications such as health monitoring, industrial automation and smart transportation. The importance of IoT is also seen in the ongoing development of the next-generation mobile system, known as 5G. The main focus of this PhD position will be on the design and development of wireless communication protocols for health monitoring systems empowered by 5G technologies. Such a system is expected to satisfy application requirements in terms of connectivity, reliability, timeliness and throughput. Some of the examples on activities in this research context are (i) design and implementation of Fog-assisted IoT algorithms, (ii) design and implementation of heterogeneous IoT networks, and (iii) design protocols and mechanisms for data collection and data management. It is important to note that IoT devices equipped with low-power wireless radios are highly prone to interference, and thus tackling unreliable wireless links is very challenging in a system design.
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).
This work is to be conducted in a collaborative and energetic research group with strong track records in wireless communication systems. It is expected that the candidate performs research in the given area through a combination of experimentation, simulations and/or analytical modeling. Knowledge or experience in areas such as cellular, wireless, and sensor networks, resource allocation, communication protocols, performance measurements, modeling, and evaluation is therefore desirable.
Excellent programming skills (e.g. C, C++, Java and Python), good knowledge in networking software (e.g., TCP/IP protocol stack, SDN, NFV, OpenStack, Docker), networking tools/simulators (e.g. OMNeT++, Contiki, and TinyOS) as well as good oral and written communication skills in English are required. The candidate should be able to work independently, as well as in a team; and be enthusiastic about pushing the state-of-the-art. Collaboration with academic and industry partners through national/international research projects is expected. Part of the work will be carried out within the Celtic_Plus Health5G European project that aims at designing and implementing heterogeneous health monitoring systems enabled by 5G technologies.
