PhD scholarship in public administration and politics

The Doctoral School of Social Sciences & Business at Roskilde University is accepting applications for its annual PhD independent research scholarship within the research area of public administration and politics affiliated at the Department of Social Science and Business (ISE).   

Application requirements and assessment of candidates 
The application must include the following documents:   
1. A research proposal for the PhD Project (maximum length 5 pages plus reference list)    The proposal should clearly indicate all of the following: 
a. field of study 
b. research problem 
c. theoretical framework 
d. review of the relevant literature 
e. methodological approaches 
f. analytical framework (general considerations regarding the empirical evidence to be analysed) 
g. ethical considerations relevant to the project 
h. time schedule indicating how the applicant plans to complete the research proposed within a three-year period   Research Proposals should be single spaced, using Times New Roman size 12 font, 2 cm margins on all sides, numbered pages, and with a header stating the applicant’s name.   
2. A Curriculum Vitae (CV) (maximum length 5 pages) that summarizes the applicant’s academic and other relevant professional experience 
3. Documentation of previous education (a relevant Master’s degree and grade is essential; the written evaluation of the thesis may be included) 
4. If possible, a letter of recommendation from a full-time scholar or a full-time faculty member at the Dept. of Social Science and Business.

  • Does the proposal suggest potential for original research?  
  • Is the research question clear and precise?  
  • Does the theoretical and methodological approach appear appropriate?  
  • Does the research project (including primary data collection and/or field research) appear feasible for a 3 year PhD?  
  • Does the applicant have sufficient qualifications? Including a relevant master degree and top grades?  
  • Does the applicant have sufficient language and/or methodological proficiency?  

  In addition the following set of criteria are applied:   

  • Fit of the research topic within the priority research areas at ISE.  
  • Prior research experience (bearing in mind that the project must not duplicate the applicant’s prior research).  
  • Availability and commitment of appropriate supervisor within the Department.  

The Doctoral School 
You will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Business, which provides PhD training and research within an interdisciplinary, international, and professional environment. The Doctoral School is part of a dynamic community of researchers who share a commitment to understanding society in diverse contexts of change and global engagement. Researchers come from all over the world and engage in topics that are geographically, theoretically and methodologically diverse. The Doctoral School is divided into four PhD programmes: International Studies, Business Studies, Social Studies and Public Administration. As a PhD student you will be associated with the phd programme in Public Administration headed by professor Jon Kvist and you are are able to join one of two research groups: Roskilde School of Governance or Magt, Identitet og Kritik.

Terms of employment 
The employment as a PhD student is full time for three years. Apart from working on your PhD thesis it is expected that you take relevant university courses equivalent to 30 ECTS points and participate in teaching at the department.    

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.    

Application procedure 
After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee. Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment. The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and – later on – their assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
