Engineering was founded January 1 2015, and started off with high
ambitions. The aim was to grow and become a leading center of innovation
by combining the latest research in life sciences with biochemistry.

The department consists of four divisions, each conducting outstanding research in the areas of industrial biotechnology, systems biology, chemical biology and food science. The overall goal is to help build a sustainable society and improve human health.
Nearly 200 people from 20 countries are currently working at the department. The working environment is characterized by respect, cooperation, responsibility, creativity and job satisfaction.

Information about the division
The Division of Industrial Biotechnology (www.chalmers.se/indbio) is a highly international group, which since it’s establisment in 2008 has been very successful and now counts ~40 members. Research activities at the division focus on utilization of renewable raw materials for a sustainable production of fuels and chemicals. The research performed within the group spans from fundamental research to technology development and lab-scale applications, and includes enzymology and enzyme discovery, fermentation technology, metabolic engineering, bioelectrochemistry, and algal biotechnology. The division has an extensive instrument platform for analytics, molecular biology, fermentation and protein production and purification, which are all available for the project. In addition, core facilities with advanced equipment are available within both the Department and at the University campus.
Information about the project
We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral candidate for a project where the overall aim is to deepen our understanding of which yeast species can break down the xylan part of lignocellulosic biomass, and to identify and characterize new xylanolytic enzymes with unique properties that can be used in the industry for the production of biofuels and biochemicals. Bioinformatic data-mining, yeast and enzyme characterization and genomics and proteomics methods will be used to reached the project objectives. The project is funded by Carl Trygger foundation, and the successful candidate will be employed on a two year postdoc stipend.
The major responsibility as a Postdoc will be to perform research within the scope of the project and our group. The tasks also include writing project reports and scientific manuscripts, and you will be expected to share your research results both in presentation at the division/department and at international conferences. Being part of our research group also involves taking responsiblity for side tasks such as keeping the lab and instruments in good condition.
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
The candidate must hold a doctoral degree, generally not older than three years, in Biotechnology/Bioengineering, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or other related disciplines. Experience in Eukaryotic microbiology, Enzymology and Molecular biology techniques is required. Know-how of plant cell wall biotechnology, heterologous protein expression and secretion in yeast, omics and analytical techniques are highly qualifying merits.
The successful candidate has an outstanding academic track record and has published as first author in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. Important qualities are enthusiasm, to be able to drive and conclude projects independently, take own initiatives and discuss/develop own ideas, be creative and have a problem-solving ability. Excellent cooperation and social abilities are important, and the candidare must also be highly proficient in spoken and written English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
