Postdoc in Image Analysis for Autonomous Systems and Quality Inspection

The Section for Image Analysis andComputer Graphics at DTU Compute, invites applications for an appointment aspostdoc in Image Analysis for Autonomous Systems and Quality Inspection. Theposition is for three years and aimed computer vision for autonomous systemsand quality inspection of manufactured objects and part of collaborativeresearch projects. One project within vision based naval navigation and theother project aimed at quality inspection systems for wind turbine blade. Theposition is available from 1 February 2019 or according to mutual agreement.

Responsibilitiesand tasks
This postdoc position is aimed at carryingout research in computer vision methodology applied to autonomous systems andfor inspection in manufacturing. This includes: 

    Methods for object detection and classification.Methods for 3D surface scanning and analysis ofderived data.Design of camera-based inspection systems and relatedanalysis methods.Development of machine learning based computer visionsystems including methods for generating artificial data for training suchmodels.

The position is part of ongoing researchprojects for autonomous naval navigation and wind turbine blade inspection.

The postdoc will have the responsibilityof delivering research results and methodologies according to the plans andmilestones set in the projects that this position is part of. It is thereforeexpected, that the candidate will take a lead in planning his/her work in closecollaboration with other project partners.

Computer vision in natural lightingconditions and harsh environments, which is the conditions at wind turbinesites and for naval navigation, is highly challenging. Obtaining reliableinformation about defects or foreign objects requires advanced inferencemethods. New developments in machine learning based computer vision have showngood results, and it is expected that the research should take an offset indeep learning for computer vision. Therefore, emphasis will be put on: 

    experience with image analysis and computer vision,experience with deep learning or other machinelearning methods for image analysis,and experience with practical acquisition and (realtime) analysis of image data.

The project will to some extent alsoinvolve practical imaging setups for data acquisition, either in the lab or ina natural environment. So, experience with practical computer vision and dataacquisition will also be beneficial.

Furthermore, it will to some extent bepossible to engage in: 

    Supervision of students and BSc and MSc level.Engage in limited teaching activities such as singlelectures in courses or PhD-summer schools.

In the Image Analysis and ComputerGraphics Section there is a close collaboration between researchers, which willalso include this postdoc position. Furthermore, there are project partners atDTU Electro, DTU Wind, and other DTU departments as well as external industrialpartners that will be part of the collaboration. To get the most out ofthe position, it is important that these collaborators are utilized such thatmethods, data and results are shared and published with these partners.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

Salary and termsof employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with theDanish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreedupon with the relevant union. The period of employment is three years.
