About the department
The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) focuses on research, innovation and education in the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems, with a significant focus on materials. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry, and society creates a creative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and Ph.D. students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication. The Department also houses a leading density functional theory (DFT) activity.

Come help extend the DFT success to organic systems!
We are fellow architects of modern, so-called truly nonlocal DFT calculations. Our van der Waals (vdW) density functional (vdW-DF) method is a computationally efficient formulation of nonlocal DFT that also describes vdW forces. These forces arise, for example, among organic molecules and typically control the structure in organic systems. Traditional DFT is already the workhorse for theory in much of material science and chemistry. The vdW-DF method is opening doors for DFT-based characterization in broader organic chemistry, in nanoscience, in nanotechnology, and for biomaterials.

Guided by condensed-matter theory, we now have a consistent vdW-DF formulation for general-purpose DFT calculations. It works equally well among molecules and in traditional materials and we are set up to study heterogeneous organic systems. This is a huge class of problems of both fundamental and technological importance. For example, we can now engineer the binding at the interface between an organics dye and a semiconducting or metal substrate, a key step in the design of better solar cells.

About the Ph.D. research project
You will help us resolve important remaining challenges for the organics-interface problem. We want to understand not only the material structure but also the electrical contact at the interface. We want to describe the interplay between interface charge transfer and the vdW binding. The project is part of a transatlantic collaboration.

Major responsibilities
The Ph.D. research project involves method development for nonlocal DFT, with an emphasis on improving the description of charge transfer processes in organics. You must learn to use the fortran and python languages as you will implement, code, and test the developments. You will also apply the method progress to study the charge transfer at specific organics-semiconductor/metal interfaces. Finally, you must also complete a set of Ph.D. courses and, when relevant, participate in international collaborations.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The Ph.D. position is limited to 4 year. An extension of up to one year, for teaching, may be possible, if undergraduate teaching is available.

Qualifications
We seek a highly motivated and self-propelled person who has completed a master level in Physics, in Engineering Physics or in Physical Chemistry. Some training in condensed matter physics is a requirement.

You are fluent in oral and written English. You are able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative effort. Prior experience in scripting languages like python is an advantage.
