Postdoc in Computational Modeling of Electric Stimulation of the Auditory Nerve

The Hearing Systems Group at the Department of Electrical Engineering seeks a qualified candidate for a 1-year Postdoc position.

Our research is concerned with auditory signal processing and perception, speech communication, audiology, behavioural and objective measures of auditory function, computational auditory neuroscience, environmental acoustics, and hearing-instrument signal processing. The goal of our research is to develop objective physiological and psychophysical tests for the diagnosis of hearing impairment in humans by combining physiology, clinical and experimental audiology and non-invasive MR imaging.

The aim of this Postdoc project is to develop a computational model of electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve (AN). So far, computational models of the AN are either limited to a specific pulse shape, do not account for physiological data or are limited to one single nerve fiber. The main focus of the project will be to extend an existing two-point neuron model representing a single nerve fiber towards a popuation model including the spread of current and spatial distribution of neurons. This population model will then be extended to be able to simulate electrophysiological gross potentials like electrically-evoked compound action potentials (eCAP) and electrically-evoked auditory brainstem responses (eABR). This complete model will provide an objective tool to evaluate stimulus parameters for electrical stimulation of the inner ear and to improve the quality of cochlear implants.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will be working in an interdisciplinary environment with researchers of different background and working on various topics within hearing research and expected to contribute to the activities in the group and to actively participate in the scientific discussions. This project is well embedded into other projects within the group with an active exchange between the contributing researcher.

With respect to the project, 

    You will be responsible for defining and implementing the computational modelYou will contribute to a multi-faceted approach to understand the physiological mechanisms and implication behind electric stimulation of the auditory nerveYou will engage in scientific discussions with the goal to improve the quality of cochlear implant users and hearing impaired listenersYou will work together in a team to disseminate the research results on a high international levelYou will receive guidance and advice on a regular basis from senior scientific staff within the group.

As part of the group you will have access to our international network of partners and will contribute to this network through scientific collaboration in the fields of behavioural experiments and physiological studies.

Qualifications
Candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent. Working in an interdisciplinary environment requires the ability to explore different research fields.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
