At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Civil Engineering, one or more PhD stipend(s) are available within the PhD programme Civil Engineering. The stipend(s) is open for appointment from 1 September 2018 or soon hereafter.

Job description

The position will be related to the research field of Indoor Environmental and Energy Engineering at Aalborg University.

The PhD project is part of an Independent Research Fund Denmark project “NOWA” at Aalborg University.

Relative humidity in the indoor environment is a key parameter for the durability of buildings, building materials and the comfort and health of humans. Level and fluctuation in relative humidity are strongly influenced by water vapor dynamics of materials in the building. New research implies that new, locally sustainable materials such as hemp, seaweed, and straw have a greater potential to regulate indoor humidity than conventional industrial building materials. However, due to experimental limitation requiring equilibrium times from several days to weeks, measurements in literature so far have not been able to address vapor sorption dynamics on the daily scale relevant for building physics. Understanding short-term moisture dynamics and developing new moisture analysis and simulation models is thus necessary for designing healthy, comfortable buildings.

Teaching will mainly be related to the engineering programmes on Indoor Environmental and Energy Engineering, Building Energy Design and Architecture & Design. At Bachelor level teaching is in Danish, while it is in English at Master level.

Qualifications and Specific Competences: MSc in Indoor Environmental and Energy Engineering or related studies. Candidates with a documented strong background in measurements and pore network modeling by e.g. CFD will be preferred.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
