Luleå University of Technology is Scandinavia’s northernmost technical university. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural resources Engineering conducts research and education in the fields of mining, construction and environment supported by large and well-equipped laboratories. We have strong collaborative links with industry and the public sector. 70% of our research is externally funded and we have well-established international collaborations with universities in every continent. Our Department comprises 370 people from over 50 different nationalities, which includes 180 PhD students and 50 Professors. Soil Mechanics is one of 19 research subjects within the Department, and the research group of about 35 persons belongs to the Division of Mining and Geotechnical Engineering with in total around 70 employees. Soil mechanics comprises soil material behavior and foundation engineering, with application to civil engineering, energy and mining. The subject will increase its activities in the area of soil dynamics, numerical modelling and laboratory activities. The subject area is involved in several projects related to challenges of interest by the Swedish road and railway authorities.

Background and job description
The particular project concerns the usage of three dimensional FE codes. In particular how 3D-effects should be handled in slope stability computations, investigate how 3D-effects should be accounted for as well as interpreted and whether consideration of 3D-effects are important to be taken into account by practitioners or not. Main focus is on slope stability problems for excavations. To strengthen the research group in numerical modelling, we now open a position for 1 year to study this topic. The position is for a post doc or a researcher with a PhD in soil mechanics and experience with numerical modelling, in particular with the program PLAXIS. In the project, a lot of numerical computations with the commercial limit equilibrium program Slope/W and the commercial finite element program PLAXIS (2D and 3D) will be performed.

Duties
The Post Doc/Researcher will conduct comparable 2 and 3 dimensional numerical analyses of foremost excavations with increasing complexity. Together with the supervisor Ass. Prof. Hans Mattsson the results of these computations should be utilized to formulate guidelines and scientific contributions on how 3D-effects should be handled in slope stability computations. Further to the publication of these guidelines, short courses for the stakeholders and consultants will be developed and conducted.

The Position is limited to one year. A possibility for an extension will be evaluated and depends on funding available.

Qualifications
The candidate should have a MsC in Civil Engineering and a PhD in Soil Mechanics or Geotechnical Engineering. Knowledge of the use of numerical finite element software for geotechnical applications is a requirement. Experience in using the programs Slope/W and PLAXIS 2D and 3D would be essential and experience in constitutive modelling and understanding of material quantification in geotechnical laboratories would be of advantage. Fluent English in spoken and written is necessary. Swedish or another Scandinavian language would be of advantage.
