Postdoc in System level reliability analysis of power electronic based power systems (P21841)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a position as postdoc in System level reliability analysis of power electronic based power systems is open for appointment from August 1, 2018, or soon hereafter.The position is available for a period of 2 years.The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, and Electrical Machines) to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 250 employees – out of them are more than 100 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out are most often in collaboration with industry. The position is related to the research program of Efficient and Reliable Power Electronics and the postdoc research fellow will be positioned to the section for Power Electronic Systems.

Job description

The postdoc position is a part of a research grant on Reliable Power Electronic based Power System (REPEPS) from the Villum Foundation Investigator programme running from 2017 to 2023, which is awarded to Professor Frede Blaabjerg. The overall goal is to develop new methods for ensuring reliable and safe operations of power electronic based power systems. An integrated reliability assessment tool, which can incorporate both the physical characteristics of hardware components and control software optimization at the system level, will be developed for predicting the lifetime of power electronic based power systems. New insights into the mutual interactions of power electronic converters at multiple time scales will be revealed to leverage the control effects of power electronics for power grid stabilization and protection. The failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA) of power electronic based power systems, referred to as representation of relevant conditions under which the system failure likelihood of occurrence and its severity can affect the whole power system lifetime operation.

Research areas for this postdoc position will be within power electronics and power electronic-based power systems. Experience in analysis and modeling of large-scale power electronic systems considering mission profiles, failure and damage indictors, failure detection and hardware prototyping is of high interest. More specifically, a successful applicant should document strong ability in most of the listed topics:

•    Modeling of power converters and power electronic-based power systems.
•    System level reliability analysis incl. failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA)
•    Physics of failure analysis.
•    Finite element analysis.
•    Mission profile analysis of power electronic-based power systems.
•    Experience in highly accelerated life testing (HALT).
•    Hardware prototyping and validation of the analysis.
•    Outreach and dissemination.

It is expected that between 15 to 25 researchers will be involved in REPEPS and the research environment will be very international oriented. Proficiency in English and strong teamwork spirit are required.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
